bicolor blenny

on drsfosterandsmith i went to look a a bicolor blenny. beautifull fish. but under it it says that some people say there perfect reef fish and nice fish all around. but others say they nip on some corals and bully firefish. and im getting a firefish.

just wondering if yall have experienced anything wrong with bicolor blennies

Usually a pretty small harmless fish. I've had two myself over the years and they never harassed any tankmates or nipped at any corals.


But, as with any species, your could run into a bad apple that will cause problems.

Great fish! IME they will only harass or be harassed by other blennies or fish that look really similiar in coloring. In my old tank the royal gramma and the bi color used to knock heads when they got together during feeding. The rest of the time they stayed at opposite sides of my 150g. I guess the black/burnt orange and purple/yellow where close enough in color for them to dislike each other. Mine never chased the firefish, but to be honest I have never had a firefish last more than a couple of weeks. They are just too skitish in big tank IMO.

I have a 120gal reef with a Firefish and a Bi-Color blenny. The firefish posts up in the front of the tank and the Bi-Color takes refuge near him in a few caves....he hops all day long from spot to spot. Very active and has a lot of character.

I have had both for about 4 months and no problems here. No coral nipping either. The bi-color does a great job trimming algae on my rocks.

Also, i use to have a Royal Gramma and it disappeared one week later. After reading entropy's post I'm now thinking the Bi-Color was the culprit of that "milk carton" royal gramma.

Seriously though, blennies can take care of themselves when they want to. My lawnmower blenny leaves nice lip marks on my powder brown tang all the time and the tang is at east three times the size.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to bicolor blennys (and saltwater tanks), so this might be a silly question. However, my new blenny is bemusing me. He is adorable and full of personality, perching around the top of the tank as king of his domain. I assume it is a 'he' because of the issue I'm about to mention. He changes color, rather frequently and startlingly quickly. It's an amazing trait, and not one I was expecting. He puts on white/blue stripes, especially when gazing around the tank from his perch. I've heard about this when mating, but there's definitely no mate available in my tank. He might be trying to mate with my diamond goby. I wouldn't want to deny him his 'forbidden love', just want to make sure draping himself sexily across rocks covered in stripes is not stressful for him. He certainly looks into it.

Also make sure you dont get the flametail blenny which looks very similar. I have one and a few other friends have one that love to eat my most expensive corals/clams.

I am WAY happier with my Royal Gramma which has a similar color pattern just alot brighter.
