Ok..so many of you frag..have frag tanks..do cuttings etc

:hypnotyized:

Ok so how do you do this? Lets say for this thread...as a relative newbie...no fragging tank. Why would you "frag" and how?

How do you know when a piece "needs" to be fragged?

Oh so many questions.

I do not have anything that needs it...just want to know...everytime I read about frags this curiosity gets me.

Thanks!

Most people frag to sell or trade corals. As for how it depends on what you're fragging. This is a huge topic so it would be easier if you ask specific questions.

For SPS or any stony corals a pair of bone cutters is the ideal tool of choice. As stated above fragging is done for trading or selling. It can also be done to free up much needed space.

Here's a shortcut to some basics.

Fun With Fragging: Basics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtkD6GXd8v0&feature=related

You can follow that up with:

Fun with Fragging: Mushrooms, etc.

If and when you frag, be sure to follow safe practices. For example, some corals are known to be highly toxic (and may squirt you) so wear safety goggles to protect your eyes and wash hands thoroughly following the process and/or wear latex gloves.

Looks like GARF is as antiquated as I am. youtube makes it simple.

when fragin stress can be a bad thing especially with a small colony or with a tank that is not 100% stable I had bad experience with this thought i would mention it

There is ALWAYS a risk in fragging. To both the colony and the frag. Rarely is the mother colony fatally damaged, but it can... Also as noted above, be VERY careful, especially with zoas and palys. Also remember to be careful with your discard water from fragging them. There was a thread not too long ago and I think it was fatal to the pet...
