i was wondering if you could use the rubbermaid containers they sell at lowe's for a sump.. like an 18g one, and how long they lasted?

the stand doesnt have much room inside; in fact, i can probably only fit 2 of the 18g rubbermaid roughneck containers in there.

i was thinking of having a small container for a skimmer and another container for macroalgae and live rock

any ideas?

i did it like that for a while and it looked pretty funny but it worked and you need a sump. if you don't have a sump then you should do it, just temporarily because they are pretty inexpensive but i would find a 30g long and use that as a sump. you find them on here every once in a while for $30 or so and they work better than average. good luck.

I have seen on other boards people using Rubbermaid containers for sumps and fuges.

One of these days I am going to make a no light fuge using a non-clear plastic container. I am thinking of wrapping the container in lots of duct tape for reinforcement.

Oh and bailing wire for even more strength. "Red Green"

As Peter kinda mentioned, one draw back to those is they bow a lot when filled with water. Depending on how well they are built, they might break open down the road. Building a cradle out of wood (to support all 4 sides) will prevent it from bowing so much.

thats the only drawback of it. i am using an 18 gallon one, but i put one of those rubberstraps around it. i setup the tank to get the cycle going while im out of school, so i did kind of a sloppy job on the plumbing.

does everyone think that itll eventually crack and leak?

go to feed supply store like the one in New Braunfels,, get you one of the heavy duty "TUFF" troughs,, I used a 40 gal one for my fuge for almost 2 years

Yeah you can get a lot of different container sizes at Tractor Supply. I'm sure there is one out by Edinburg. You can also check out their website for the different types and sizes.

As for the large sumps, you can't beat the 50g and 100g rubbermaid troughs if you got the space!

How big is the 40 gallon one? The smallest they had was 50 gallons and I know it won't fit under the stand. My only othe option is to buy a tank and drill it or buy a custom sump/refugium
