Has anyone read about this reef donation / circulation /sharing program implemented in California by the Bay Area Reefers group? It is such an interesting concept!

Please take a moment to read about it in this article:

http://www.reefhobbyistmagazine.com/archives/vol_2/issue6/pages/issue_6-14.htm

We are finally in a situation where we could participate in a program like that and would be happy to do so. Any one else like the idea?

I like the idea of keeping track of where the frag goes and who shares it from there. It's a neat idea to have the history of a coral available to trace at any time.

Sounds good. I would be willing to put some corals up if we organized it well. Maybe a maast forum restricted to those who have already put some coral up for grabs. I think it would be fun.

To be honest with you.....I would LOVE to be in this type of program..unfortunately I am not in the position to provide any type of coral to pass it along recently starting a tank and don't have anything that is quite fragable.....but if we (MAAST members) start something like this....you can definitely cound me in on this...sounds like fun....

That would be cool to do with Maast.

Guys this is a great idea and here's the BUT...

With all the new and different parasites now and yet to be discovered..it would be hard for Maast to accept the liability of this kind of venture. I wouldn't want to be a part of crashing someone's tank over a frag or two and where and who would store these corals?

Not trying to be a drag, this is just my opinion...

IMcompletelyHO, maast runs the same risk in the buying and selling forum. Liability would be in accepting the corals, and qt might be adviseable. I think just a format for posting corals among members would be all we would need. It would be nice to be able to see trading history of others involved..but I wouldnt think it would take much if people are really willing to be part of something like this.

Thanks Bill, we're in also if others are interested.

I like that the donator gets to set some parameters on who should get to take it (really not all that different from what texreefer did tonight in the for sale forum with a free ocellaris).

The main differences between this and the for sale forum are 1.)that the coral is free, 2.)the donator is involved in stipulating who should get the coral, such as what kind of lights, only to an established reef tank, only to a tank of x # gallons, etc. and 3).the person accepting the coral makes a commitment to propagating some more and passing it on.

I know the article was ridiculously hard to read and I appreciate those of you who took the time to do so. Here is a link to the Bay Area Reefers web page that explains the program...

Thanks for posting that Kristy. Sounds really cool. Would there be some kind of log to track what has gone where? I am definitely into supporting this idea, both with corals and however else I can. I read this article in the free magazine a week or so ago and was excited to hear about it...it would be really cool if we all pulled together something similar down here.

I think this is an innovative idea. One of these days I'll have some frags that I'll gladly contribute...the oldest frag in my tank right now is only 2.5 months old.

I understand your concerns BB, but as far as the risk of parasites and disease goes...we take that risk any time we buy a frag. I actually feel much more comfortable accepting corals here rather than in the stores as I know it's been in a reputable tank "QT'ing" for me for quite some time. We could probably make it a stipulation that MAAST isn't liable for the frag and that involvement in the program is at your own risk. If someone doesn't take the proper precautions when receiving a coral...that shouldn't be considered MAAST's fault.

I say let's just rip theirs off.

I can likely also donate a RBTA or 2, too.

If we need a moderator, or cordinator, or whatever for this program I would gladly do it.

The comas format looks good. It seems simple and fair. Good find.

So I suppose this would be something the board needs to vote on in order for us get started? Any input as to how that would work (timeline if it is approved, etc.)

We are currently discussing the possibility of a program like this. I will keep everyone posted.

Sweet I also started a discussion for the mods over at DFWMAS, they also have a program, asking for suggegtions, and also the tracking software type stuff that they use.

I gave away three complete reef systems, from a 60 gallon reef cube, to two 100 gallon reef systems and everything to run them. High end systems. Never heard anything else about that. One system was here, the other two on Marsh......

Way to get things moving subsailor:applause:. I have some frags ready to go..This will be a great new addition to our club, and help disperse coral throughout the area. Very cool!
