i know u probably heard felipe talk about it and after i got some real good advice from txreefer, bstreep and a few others, who say that less is better when it comes to dosing your reefs, why not fiji gold??? it is all natural, it contains "calcium, magnesium, and all major and minor trace minerals", and you can't overdose the reef..(they say)....i do put quite a bit more than the suggested dose but i haven't ever really tested my water.

things i've noticed after using it for about 8 months now:

1. it does turn my glass, rocks, pumps, snails, and clams purple.

2. my polyps do grow at a very good rate.

3. i don't think i've ever lost a coral in it and i'm pretty risky

4. my rbta got about 1' in there

5. sps (the only 1 that i have...a cap) grows very slowly

6. the candy cane (the neon stuff) has grown 1 new head in about 8 months

7. the frawgspawn went from 2 heads to about 2 heads with 5 little ones around the main ones.

8. the pom pom xenia grows like crazy

9. but the flowerpot doesn't look to happy and niether does the open brain.....i think it knows somethng!

what are the experts thoughts on this?

thanks, joel

my opinion:

b-ionic is tried and tested. you can dig a hole on a saltwater aquarium message board and find literally hundreds who use it.

fiji gold. no clue.

are you testing before and after adding it?

not an expert but isnt fiji gold just a coralline accel like purple up?..i used it when i first started my tank there was good coralline growth especially compared to purple up i think my rock and tank declined when i switched..and now with bionic my tank just seems healthier never tested so cant prove it but just seems that way

.....does that answer your question?

i don't know, i here people say get this level to 460 and this one to 7.5 but all i get when i test is red or blue and i don't know how to make the connection between #'s and colors. so i have tested before but i have never known the parameters.

Fiji Gold was recommend by a fellow Maast Member, Aquaman72, I have since used and continue to use it, and my soft corals just love it. When its feeding time they just open up like crazy.. I would recomend it to anyone..

I would have to agree with Tony. Unless it can be proven via tests, I don't know how much I would believe. Plus, it makes your water dirty as all get out and rests on corals leaving spots. Too much clean up to do after the fact.

Oh, all of the things that you said happened will happen with good salt, regular water and bulb changes. Just a thought...

is there a local fish store that tests the water? in san antonio? also what monitoring system would you guys....or gals suggest? if i can find out my parameters, i'll post them up here and may pennies2cents will do the same. i'd much rather add something that cant wipe out my tank because i'm the type that would wipe out my tank.

all of the locals should. It's important to take two samples, one before the addition, and one after to see if there were any affects to the CA, Mg, and Alk. I would be curious to see the results as I too have used that product. It's always good to know! :) Make sure the temps stay stable! Parrotfish poop maybe?

Here is my suggestion:
Get you basics where you want them,, cal alk salinity, dose a good two part like B-ionic ONLY when needed to maintain those levels( which in your tank should be very seldom since you are going to keep up with regular water changes right?), dose absolutley nothing else,, feed your fish like normal and do Regular water changes.. do this for 4 months and tell me you don't see a difference.... Stability is the key to success

I have used Fuji Gold for some time now, bought it by the 12 lbs container. It raised my Calcium level from 350 to 420 and held it there until I got a clam and then it dropped to 380 and could not get it back up. It brought my KH level to 8 and kept it there, Mag level at 1470.

I have started using B-ionic 2 part. My Calcium level is at 380 and KH went to 9. This weekend Calcium Reactor and Kalk Reactor are getting set up and no more Fuji or 2-part.

The down side to FG is it clouds the water for some time and settles on everything requiring you blow it off.

this is a tank that has never been tested and many times i use water from my bath tup. i used to dust the stuff off but now i just drop it in the k-3 pump and it spreads the powder around the tank. its not nearly as nice as some other tanks in this club but this is it.

thanks, there is about 100 lbs of rock in the sump and about 40 lbs in the display (140 total). the display is 37 gallons (it's a 75 gallon tank....cut in half) and the sump is 35 gallons. i forgot to mention that i also add formula 28 blocks pretty consistantly.

so Fiji Gold, Formula 28, and DT's

With the exception of pH, Fuji Gold should have no inpact on NO2, NO3, NH3/NH4. Its Calcium, Strontium, Magnesium & KH where Fuji Gold should have an impact.

Bringing this back to life....been thinking about adding fiji gold to my tank and would like some others to chime in. My purpose would be just a simple way to keep my calcium stable....and this seems to be very natural and leaves little room for one of my idiot mistakes of over dosing or something.

Thoughts? Experience? Eve...you and Ross still using? Joel, you still using it? Anyone else?

Thanks.

Well, for Ross and I when we setup our original 240 we were using it about once a week and the remaining of the week we used b-ionic 2 part. That tank was not setup long enough to see any results.. And as you know now the 240 Brick is barely on its way. We have been tank less for at least 6 months.

We did/do not use the fiji gold on the 75 gal temp tank and only use 2 part.

However, I did like the results of when we were using it in our 125. Everyone was happy. :)

I will continue to use Fiji Gold if I can find it anywhere once (1) a week on our 240 brick when things (fish & coral) finally get settled in.. :)

i liked it when i used it...

i would put it in a water bottle shake it up and let the water go and repeat that at least 3 times the rest that was left over i would drop in the sump so i wouldn't get a "dust/rock" layer on my rocks
