5.4 watts of t5ho per gallon on my 30 long.

the tank I am currently putting together will have 216 watts of pc, 156 watts of t5ho, and 525 watts of mh. That totals at 897, divide that by 125= 7.18 watts per gallon.

34g tank but realistically there's probably only 28-30g's of water. 7.35wpg @ 34g's though.

I thought i read in several places that the watts per gallon measure was now an obsolete thought in the requirement of what types of corals could be kept....

3.5 wpg it's not how much you have, it's how you use it.

440watts on a 45g = 9.78wpg. As others have stated, the wpg is not really used anymore as a rule for saltwater/reef tanks. The quality/spectrum of the light is what's more important.

No, im not saying its a good measure, I was just curious. I thought mine was a bit high lol. I have dual 400w sitting about 1.5 ft over the 55g. Its a Magnetic ballast which sucks though, but it has Reeflux 12k 400w bulbs. Im not using that as my measure, I just want to have great coral growth. Since I am planning to have quite a few sps because I like the way a tank full of Acros and other SPS looks.... Sprouting with colors is what I want. I plan on adding T5 True Actinics, and only running the Halides for 6hrs. Run the Actinics for 2hrs then the halides for 5-6hrs then 1hr for actinics stay on at the end. That way I can get a decent light cycle going. Right now the Halides come on and run for 8hrs then go off. So i want to replicate the light cycle better.

I figured putting it higher would help with not burning the corals but have all the equipment for about another year down the road when I buy the lager tank I want. 150-300g depending on where and how I can place it in a House when we purchase one.

Jim how do you handle the evaporation on such a small tank?

Mr Cob
Sat, 3rd May 2008, 09:46 PM
440watts (VHO) + 260watts (PC) = 700watts on my 120gal = 5.8 wpg

Jim - I think you need to upgrade to a 400 watt halide. See how long it takes to boil that 1 gallon! :shades::what_smile::hypnotyized:

1250 in halides and 580 in t5 actinic on a 240gal = 7.625

I have 6X80 watt T5HO's with individual reflectors over my 150 and I have great growth...only a little over 3 watts per gallon.

Like what was said before...it's not the amount, but the quality. Additionally, my electricity bill isn't killing me and I'm not boiling my tank's water...ie no chiller needed. I'm pretty happy with them.
