Howdy all,
A current discussion on RC about Petco stocking anemones and clams got this going.
Go here and maybe we can change their mind;
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/petcokills/
I've not seen any clams yet but I've seen some nems recently here in Austin. Took all I had
not to buy them.
Robb
I posted this on ARC too.

I e-signed. I have seen first hand the lack of knowledge and the disgusting conditions the saltwater tanks are in at these stores. I bought an arrow crab from them less than two weeks ago and he already died. Nothing ever looks in good shape in the saltwater area at the store I frequent. I am glad someone else has noticed and decided to take action!
Thanks for posting!

As righteous as these petitions attempt to be, they've been done so many times and really in the end there's no long lasting change. As long as a consumer is willing to hand out cash from their pocketbook and make a purchase from PetCo, or any other store lacking humane conditions, well.. it will just continue.

Wow, seems the anti-pet store people are back. I just so happened to see a brand new "Boycott Petland" sticker on a car yesterday. It had something about them selling dogs from puppy mills. As the other Chris stated, as long as people keep giving these stores money, the problem won't go away. Peta and the other groups needs to work on educating the customers and do so in away without all the drama and extremist views so people will actually listen to them.

I agree with both Chris' and I don't want to offend anyone but if you buy these animals in an attempt to "save" them your only contributing to the problem. If you want to save them best option is to not spend your money in a store like that.

I don't even by dog food from them anymore. I hate petco, their tanks alway look unkept, and they constantly sell puffers and anenome to unsuspecting salt newbs.

If that is what makes Petco guilty, then they should be boycotting half the LFS in the industry. In the end, it is the consumer's responsibility to know what they are purchasing ahead of time and how to take care of it, not the business. Business's can't follow you home to make sure you are taking care of the fish or whatever properly. With so much information available in books and now the internet, customers should know what they are getting into. They should be able to recognize a good reputable place to make their purchases and where not to.

IMHO, petitions, boycotts, etc. really never work - only the lack of $$. When people quit buying SW from Petco, they will quit stocking it.
Petition signers know better, and wouldn't buy from Petco anyway.

My girlfriend works at the PETCO here in my area. She got the job there because she wanted to remain in the pet store industry, prior to that when she was in schertz she worked at pollys in UC and New Braunsfels for about 6 years. When she moved up here with me we checked ALL OF THE 3 LFS that we have within 30 miles and none of them have any employees outside the owner. She was just complaining last night because the"AQUATIC SPECIALIST" ordered some zoo's and a finger leather, and it has been in the tank for a week and they have not opened once. They are in the normal store tank with the regular household NO lighting it. It is a shame, however if you really wanted to point fingers the distributors continue to distribute as well. When it comes down to it it is all about th $$$. The Petco's here in this part of texas go through saltwater inc wich also supplies A LOT of LFS's here in Texas. Anything that an LFS can order from saltwater Inc. Petco can also order. They were trying to get her to be the aquatic specialist in a new store they are opening here. Luckily this is her last 2 weeks working there as she just got a job doing Maintenance and cleaning aquariums in the local area. She has hated working there from Day 1, but sometimes you have to make sacrifices to do what you love.

Wow 60 people have signed the petition. Petco is probably terrified now.
I think we should boycott HEB because they sell ice cream to fat people without first checking their cholesterol levels and fully informing them of the health risks associated with obesity and poor diet.
The job of any retail business is to sell the things that people buy. That's it.

Richard I must say that I agree with you.
Joshua on this forum has a quote in his signature from Albert Einstein that says The world is a dangerous place to live—not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.
That being said I don't agree with making fun of someone because they are trying to increase the quality of life for the marine life we have all come to apperciate and enjoy.

That sounds like too much work. Can we just go to a website and sign an online petition instead? Besides the ice cream issue, I want to fight to bring back name brands instead of Hill Country Fare stuff!!! :bareteeth:

Very funny and Very true but that still doesn't make it right. Maybe this was just to lighten things up a bit but from someone that has owned a store, keeps marine life, and is the member of a community (MAAST) that strives to educate and help, I think that statement was a little narrow minded.

I think it comes down to each store, and each individual. I know a former shop owner that does maintenance and fish orders for a large retailer, and the tanks look great. Conversely, some of the small shops do not look anywhere near as good. Instead of a petition, a solution should be posed if you want to actually get anything done. A cost analysis of livestock loss could be the right push to encourage them to outsource that portion of the upkeep. The hard part would be educating the owners of the perils and pitfalls of an ill kept tank without losing sales.
Ha, I just proved to myself why I should never run a business.
Sidenote- never use the words "perils and pitfalls" if you are in sales, rofl.
