My apartment stuck notes on everyone's doors today that they are doing their "annual apartment condition check & fire extinguisher check" tomorrow, which I find rather amusing since my fire extinguisher tag says its not due for another inspection until December 2009. I think it's more of a ploy to see who has dogs/cats but didn't pay a pet deposit.
I'm on the 2nd floor and I'm not supposed to have any "water furniture" up here. I've had my Biocube 14 setup in my bathroom for a couple months(just moved in January). I've been building & acquiring parts for my 75 gallon with 35 gallon sump over the last few months.
I finally finished everything & moved my big tank into my apartment last week. Luckily I'm waiting on my RO/DI to arrive and there's no water in my big tank yet though I was forced to break down my Biocube 14 and hide my big tank/canopy in my closet. A friend of mine is keeping my corals(just a few softies) in his tank until my new one is setup & cycled.
I wonder how much 'looking around' they'll do though I can't imagine they would really say anything about a dry tank sitting in a closet. The only thing I'm worried about is if they see my tank & make a note to pay me a surprise visit in a month or 2 after my tank is full of water. Then I'll be screwed. :(

Man I hate living in an apartment! I just had my "fire extinguisher check" last week, my roommate and I were out of town, we both locked our doors, he came back and his was unlocked!
Move to the first floor???

i wouldn't sweat it. i had a 125g and a 54 gal in my 400 sq ft apartment. i got a note stating the very same thing. I believe the person(s) they hire to do that could give a crap less about your tank or the job for that matter.
cheers,
kurt

That's what I'm hoping for. :nailbiting:

We actually had an independent guy come out to check ours in my last apartment. He and I talked for about 40 minutes about my aquarium, he was totally into it since he was a diver.
That made me figure that they had to be certified or something to check the actual extinguisher rather than some dude just coming in and verifying that it is there.

I have an apt and i had 2 100 gallon tanks at one time..they do checks all the time I would not worry about it. But I dont think its a good idea to have a big tank on the 2nd floor.

I got busted for "pet violations" at an apt I lived in once. I paid my pet deposit (and PET RENT!) but had 2 cats instead of 1. The bug exterminators were apparently paid a small fee for ratting out people with apt violations and thats how they caught me. So after that I changed my apt door lock and made them call me and I had to be home if they wanted to come into the apt (it is your right btw). I would find a big refrigrator box and wrap it up like a gift. If they want to come in, turn your tank off and "wrap up" your tank!

Hmm...I wasn't aware you are allowed to change your locks. I'll look into that for the future so I don't have any 'surprise' visits.

You arent really but if they caught you all you had to do was change em back. But it never came up because they were forced to have me present whenever they wanted to walk through.

I like the idea of wrapping up your tank. Classic! LOL...

Yeah but if his tank was wrapped up it would look a little out of place since the canopy towers to probably 7 feet!:hypnotyized:

umm...i do not believe it is true that you have the right to change the locks on a rental property. the landlord has the right to "inspect" the property at any reasonable time with, i believe, 72 hours notice. you do have the right to be there, but not to the extent of preventing their "inspection".

I know they have to give notice unless its an emergency but there really isn't much I could do anyways to hide a 75 gallon tank & everything in it.

Take all the contents of the tank and put them in the bath tub and close the curtain, now that would win tank of the month.

no one cares if you have a tank in your department. Fish tanks do not apply to the pet deposit rule! They don't **** on the carpet :)

Not true, many apartments have a problem with a glass box filled with water. A mistake and or accident can lead to ruining carpet, Subfloors, electrical work etc... Id find a apartment with a available down stairs apartment. JMO

Some apartments could care less but I have come across some that do not allow any kind of large bodies of water like tanks and water beds upstairs, and then some that just require you have renters insurance in case you have a leak.

Luckily I'm cool with my apartment complex's management. They did two of those inspections (one for insurance company reasons and one for fire extinguisher reasons-yeah my stuff wasn't due for inspection for another year haha) on me and I thought I was gonna get evicted... I'm not supposed to even have fish tanks or exotics at all. I've got 12 tanks with over 20 frogs, snakes, a gecko, 2 salt tanks. hahaha. Haven't got any notices or fines ever, but I do pay my rent on time always and I guess since I don't cause any problems they extend the same courtesy. I did however let the lady know whenever I was first looking at the property that I had reptiles and she had in the past so she was down and just told me to not announce it to the world and stay lowkey. Well it came under new management and everything seems to still be relaxed, I guess I'm lucky. I think our apartment's main objective with the insurance inspections is in regardles to people renting a 1 bedroom and 20 people living there on cots in the living room and bedroom, that's one thing management told me was not acceptable whatsoever. I think they're even lenient on allowing 3 people to live in a one bedroom.

That would pwn... a 24 hour bathtub makeshift shallow water tank hahahaha... Imagine the damage to the tub finish from the salt though. I'm sure they'd wonder why a really bright MH is behind the shower curtain though. I wonder if powerhead suction cups would stick to the walls of the tub?

So far so good, I haven't got any letters/calls yet. I just got my RODI in the mail yesterday & I'm gonna hook it up this weekend. I can start filling my tank once I get some salt! Hopefully no more inspections until I move out next February/March.

Oh Im sure you are right but after they took 35$ /month extra in pet rent from me AND a non refundable 400$ deposit I really didnt care. Besides if you pop out the cylinder and replace it, it would look the same but be keyed differently. "Hmmm I guess your office gave you the wrong key???"
