Alright, I'm the new guy to this hobby and I'm looking to get my first decent (not ultimately-fabulous, just decent) light fixture. My standard pet store 24" hood fixture is on its way into the grave-producing less and less light every day. The tank is cycled. Water quality is in great shape. Before I go forward into the world of corals, I need a new light. I have a 20 gallon tank that needs a 24" fixture.

I've found thing like this (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3733+12772&pcatid=12772) and this (http://www.aquarium-supply.biz/Current_USA_Nova_HO_X4_T5_s/293.htm). I don't know anything about brands and price is a big issue. Any recommendations? Is there some place here in San Antonio I should buy this from instead of online? Maybe a better price?

Man, if I had a 24" tank and looking for a light upgrade, I'd be ALL OVER that fixture that Javajaws has in the fs thread...

I agree, that is an awesome light, but out of my range right now.

I would get something you want, even if that means saving for a bit longer. It will end up saving you money on the long run.

In order for T5s to be efficient, they need to have individual parabolic reflectors, as well as active cooling. Most of the cheaper fixtures dont include these.

Definitely stay with the T-5's!!! PC run hotter, aren't as bright and don't last as long. If you have to go with the nova, but like Sean said saving up for a better one is the way to go. Your corals will thank you in the long run.

I have had a 36" Nova Extreme T5 light for 6 months and have a few SPS, LPS, clam and softies and all look fine. The sps, lps and clam need to be near the top of the tank to get enough light. This fixture is not rated as great since it has a single reflector. All my corals and clam are looking good. I have had the clam for 4 months it has full color. I bought mine from Doctors Floster and Smith. I like that it includes the moonlights. I have mine on a Coralife Power Center for dusk to dawn - turning actinic, lights and moonlights on and off.

nova t5s are garbage if you ask me. use ati bulbs and icecap reflectors for retro fitting and an AX5 unit if you want a hood. Still consider using ati blubs. Check out reefgeek for supplies.

I run 2 dual t5 GLO fixtures. They are te bst investments I have made. I got them second hand for 125 total. They are awesome! I don't care what you read, if you aren't going halide lights, these are as good as you need.

I'm convinced T5 will be a good investment. Does anybody have specifics of what to get and where to do it? I understand that saving up for a nice piece of equipment is a good idea, but my tank is going dark and I need a light quickly-affordable, too.

I agree with cpreefguy, take in advice though, and buy what you really want. Its your tank make yourself happy, but dont undercut yourself, going to cheap and you will only hurt yourself in the long run, you get what you pay for!
