Just wanted to see if anyone is using a cryptic Zone in the display or sump with or instead of a Refugium.

I have to admit I had no idea what you are talking about in your post. So I checked it out, and the concept is cool, (the name is cooler though). I found an article that explains the concept:

Sorry it doesn't answer your question though.

I have an unlit sump/fuge packed with rock and sand. It seems to work well :)

Oh yeah, Lee Hoy (lhoy) has one and there are pics of it somewhere on here. :)

They seem pretty cool. I'm setting up a sump now and trying decide whether I want a fuge or a cryptic zone with squirts and sponges. The sump is built out of a 10 gallon tank so it's not enough space to do both.

I would pack a fuge if it's that small. You would probably benefit from it greater, but that's a guess.

My old tank had 2 cryptic zones basically where the overflow was. Since I had a durso mod, it left a large amount of space with relatively low turbulance. I had stored live rock rubble and unintentionally a good amount of sand in there as well. It was without a doubt one of the more eerily parts of the tank... I saw small starfish, jellyfish and all sort of critters hiding out in there.
