View Full Version : favorite tang?

We are in that happy place where we are imagining all the possibilities of what we could add when we upgrade to our 210g. Toying with the idea of adding another tang, although I don't know if we will really do it (as it might involve finding a new home for "Al" our yellow tang and Mike is pretending to have objections). So, I'll put it out there to everyone: what is your favorite tang? (and maybe what you like about it, etc.)
Also, has anyone ever kept a lopezi tang? Awfully cute with those blue freckles!

Why are you letting go of the yellow? Purples are usually way more aggressive. You can have more than three tangs in the tank. Everyting will be so confusing when you make the move that I will take a few days for the territories to sink in. Not to mention more rock for hiding places. Nasos are one of my favorites.

Same here.....I will have one...along with a powder blue
Anyhow about the Lopezi, I was thinking of them as well...a small school 3 or 5 of them because they are so inexpensive and do look like cute...but was told they aren't all that good looking in person once they get a little bigger....

Yeah, I was really kind of bluffing to get a rise out of Mike! In our case, the purple tang is like a puppy dog and the yellow tang is a terror, but then "Al" (yellow) ran the tank for many months before "Grimace" (purple) crashed his party. We are not really positive if we will add another tang, but if ever we wanted to, this is definitely the time...

No wait....I LIED...my favorite tang is the Gem Tang, but not going to fork out that kind of money for a fish....don't know why i didn't think of it before.....
I guess that would be my dream fish.....but I do plan on getting the achilles some day in the near future...

Tangs are my favorite species of fish. For me, it's REALLY hard to distinguish a favorite, as I REALLY like them all, including the cheaper yellows. If I truly had to pick one though, it would either be the Powder Blue, or a Dussumieri.

Probably Achilles - but. It's my opinion that these probably shouldn't be kept. The mortality rate is insane. Once you get one and it does well, it's fine, but you might go thru a few.
I have the following tangs in my 215:
2 yellow
1 GIANT hippo
1 Orange Shoulder
1 Powder Blue
1 Sohol
Sohol was the last. It and the powder go around every once in a while.

Clown tangs are a beautiful fish as well, but on the top of the aggressive scale from what ive heard.

I think that the mortaility rate is higher amongst "faster fish" because they probably are using cyanide to catch them, but that's just a guess. My clown tang was insanely happy, then one day, it developed what looked like a tumor on it's head. The next day it was completely covered in ich and died. Prior to that nothing was out of the ordinary. It could have possibly died from liver failure from the process used to catch it, but it's only speculation. My two yellow and all of my other fish were completely unaffected, and yes, my levels were all perfect.

I always liked my Chocolate (Mimic) tang. They start off yellow when they are juveniles and slowly turn a golden brown color as they mature.

What about a Chevron Tang? I've never seen one in person, but they look pretty cool in the pics I've seen. (The pic in the link is not the best, though.)

The picture shown is a juvy, they get darker and less colorful as they age. If you go to Texas Topical they have an adult on loan in the rear tank if you want to see an adult. Great algae eaters, I do not see one doing very well with other tangs though. I have always kept mine as a one tang in a tank fish. The purple and the Sohal I believe are to be the hardiest of all Tangs. I like the purple because they keep to a size that fits in most of our tanks. Ed can get Chevron tangs on his Cali trips. I got mine from Alex when he first started the cali trips.
