I managed to purchase 20# of live rock from my brother in law's tank that he took down two weeks ago. He had it for me sitting in sw in a bucket in his garage. Part of the reason he took the tank down was a lack of time and money to properly maintain it. Needless to say, this rock is nasty. The sides that were exposed to light were dark, dark green, and little cleaning had been done.
The next step is to begin the cooking process. The instructions are here for anyone wanting to try it. http://www.dfwmas.org/Forums/viewtopic.php?p=109759#109759
I took the rock, put it in a tupperware tub, covered it in water, and put it on the back of my truck. After a 2-hour ride in the back of my truck, I was amazed at how much crud came off of and out of this rock, it was amazing. There was easily a 1/4 cup of "stuff" in the bottom of the tub. Next, I took the rock and swished and dunked it in a bucket of saltwater. For some of the really thick stuff, I took a plastic brush and removed what I could. This water was a putrid green when I was finally done. Rock goes back in the tub, fresh saltwater, and a powerhead for circulation. I'll try to get a pic of the rock tonight.
I anticipate this taking a good while, because this rock was just nasty. I'll post update pics as I go along.
