My wife and I are transferring to Ellsworth AFB, in South Dakota in Oct. Probably not a good question, but does anyone by chance happen to know of any fish stores in Box Elder or Rapid City? I realize I probably won't get any answers, but it can't hurt to ask! I am guessing I will be doing a lot of online ordering!

Ok, you are in luck at least partly. I lived in Rapid City (many times still wish I do) as it is an amazing place!!!

I use to the Transportation Planning Director in Rapid City (first job out of college). The only store that was there was a pet store in the mall and they would get some great stuff (now remember this was 1991/1992). I setup a 55 gallon tank back then. I did mail order my live rock (had to order from a fish magazine because I wasn't on the net back then). There might be a new one in town since I lived there.

I take it you haven't seen "Box Elder" yet? If you don't have to live on Base, try the west side of Rapid as the east side is very industrial. FYI, locals just refer to it as "Rapid". Also, in August will be the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. DO NOT Plan on going to the major attractions that week unless you are a biker!! And whatever you do, don't screw with the Banditos when they are in town!

There is an awesome (or was - I assume it is still in town) restaurant in Rapid downtown that was the old firestation. Brew company with great buffalo burgers, etc.

There is (or was) an movie theater downtown that was renovated that had a balcony and was very cool!

There is so much to see and do up there you should love it. Feel free to call me (512)635.6925 if you want to learn more about the area or email me. I loved Rapid. The eastern part of the State just plain sucks but the Black Hills are awesome. Be sure and make a trip over to the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming and Devil's Tower!

Goodness, I am ready to load the U-haul!

GREAT ty for all the info! I will definitely be hitting you up for more info! We are SO ready to get out of Texas (not a bad place, just when your military, sometimes it's time to move on). At first I was like, so wow, South Dakota...but all the research we have done seems to show it may just be a really good assignment!

There are gobs of former Air Force personnel who retired and returned to Rapid.

Most of my friends were military or former military. Got to walk up on a Bomber, meet Navy Seals, sit in a Black Hawk (one of my friends worked fuel for planes, etc. and would call me and say, "get out here quick".

Went to church with tons of helicopter pilots, etc.

The best is a light snow day in October 1991 when I was the ONLY one at Mount Rushmore (besides employees) and it was a weekday. It was so quiet and beautiful.

Try to do some spelunking tours of Jewel and Wind Cave. Got to Badlands in April when the Sharp-tailed Grouse are on their leks and then go watch the Lakota Souix dances and it is amazing the similarities.

I hope you have a great time up there.

I had four seasons when I lived in Kansas City. It was cool to see the changes but im not a fan of snow falling and then that same snow being on the ground 3 weeks later. Im more suited for snow falling and gone the next day like in Dallas, lol.

I've been to Devil's Tower and Mount Rushmore. Devil's Tower (aka Custer's Last Stand) is very beautiful. I remember people climbing up the side of it. Very beautiful country, at least it was when I was 6ish! :)
