View Full Version : New Tank Build (Finally!)

Ok, today I got most of the stand frame build and got the shelf that my frag tank will rest on put together. The display will be a 90 AGA RR. Plumbed into the system will be a 30 Gallon frag tank. If this looks tall to you it is, it's a 50 inch stand :D . The sump is currently on order.

#1 I hate bending over to look into my tank
#2 I wanted to fit the sump and frag tank and still have a bit of wiggle room
#3 I just like taller stands better.

Ok, the stand's frame is complete. The cross beam on the rear will be held in place by a stainless steel plate and 2 1/2 inch wood screws, then covered by a thick coat of Killz for safe measure. I will cover the frame with 1/4 inch Oak plywood. My current plan is to stain a nice dark. On Friday I will put a 75 Gal on the stand and test out to see if it bows at all.

I love the idea of the frag tank in the middle. My only advice would be to run small supports from the bottom of the tank to the bottom of the middle shelf. I personally would not trust screws alone to support the weight of a tank. Other wise the layout is a very neat idea.

I was toying with the idea of using small L brackets under the frag tank. After my water test tomorrow night will decide whether or not to implement them. I'm hoping not to have to but I may just put them in as a back up, that's the last thing I want to have to deal with in the middle of the night.

I used a 3/8 inch bolt just to be on the safe side.

where did you come across that frag tank?

klondike4001
Fri, 7th Mar 2008, 12:28 AM
Someone locally was selling it, I traded a large candy cane colony for it.

Pic Update:
After a coat of Killz, I'll probably add a second coat tomorrow night.

Looks good! What are your plans as far as corals go?

klondike4001
Fri, 7th Mar 2008, 06:29 PM
Sean, I plan to add most of what I already have an let it grow out a bit, my problem is whenever I upgrade I always seem to have enough corals to fill the new tank, so this time I'm going to wait a bit and see how everything fits. But I do plan one new present for my clown, a nice RBTA.

Update:
Today added 2nd and final coat of Killz to the stand.
Tomorrow I pick up the sump in San Marcos, 45L X 15W X 16T
Chamber 1, intake from tanks (4 in Filter Socks)
Chamber 2 Skimmer (Octopus NW-150 Needle-Wheel Protein Skimmer)
Chamber 3, Refugium w/ DSB
>>> Small shelf for Carbon and whatever else I need the water to run through
Chamber 4, Return Pump (Mag 12)

Looks great. If you are going to be using any kind od in sump return pumps I would put a peice of foam under the sump. It will cut down any noise from vibration created by the equipment.

I will begin framing the canopy now, lighting plans 2 X 250W SE MH (10k Reeflux) and 2 X 48 in. either VHO or T5's for supplimental actinics. Frag tank lighing is going to be one or 2 of these, haven't decided yet:

I think your stand is plenty solid, I guess you haven't been by B and B, the stand he has his 210 scares the hell out of me. It's basically 4 2x4's with some more 2x4's on top. All it takes is one upset customer to walk by and kick out one of those 2x4's and it's done. :hypnotyized:

Nice, I just built my stand for my 75 & its pretty tall too. The top of my tank is at 65" and the top of the canopy is about 12" higher than that. I overbuilt my even more than you did but yours finished better than mine. How big is that sump? Ace built mine & its 35 gallons.

~49 gallons

I thought my 35 gallon sump would be plenty big but now that I have it up & running I wish I would have gone bigger. I dunno how those guys do it with those ~20 gallon sumps.

klondike4001
Wed, 30th Apr 2008, 12:24 PM
tropicana, thanks for the compliments, I've actually been asked to build stands/canopy's for people, but with classes I barely have time to finish my own, maybe over the summer, or when I'm done with school.

joelb, thanks

bronck83, Ace recommened I go with as large as a sump as I could fit, I know better than to argue with Ace. I wanted a large fuge, and I had to go with a larger sump to make it a reality. I agree, a 20 gallon sump would never serve my needs.

I think the 3's are fine (850gph each). I have two of them on my 120gal, I originally was going to get the number 4's but heard a few people on maast talk about them being loud and having hic-up start ups when on timers. Haven't heard of any problems with the 3's and mine work great on my 120gal.

I do however prefer the wider flow range you get without the directional mods that you have attached. I left mine off.

bigmoe21,
give it a week or 2, it'll be full of frags.

RayAllen,
The frag tank was something I decided I couldn't live without on this build.

The rock actually turned out really we considering I just kinda dropped it in, it's not really a pile, I just call it that since I didn't actually place anything, but it'll all get moved around in July when I move, my idea at the moment is to make sure it cycled properly and everything's running well. I'm going to move the tank about 2 weeks before I break down my 29 gallon, just to make sure everything's ready. I will take all my frags/small colonies out of my 29 when the frag tank had completed its cycle, I really am out of room in there.

Thanks, it was a little bit pricey of a pice but I really like the coloration. It pulls plenty of gunk but I still think I can get it to perform better especially once I can get the new ATB pinwheel

any FTS. i want to see what ZEO's done for you

I've actually stopping dosing ZEO for a few weeks, I've been having wild pH and alk swings so the ZEO gods recommended I give it a rest until I can get my tank back into the normal params.

Thanks, I'm still getting the hang of it.
