No, 40ppm is not an acceptable level. Did you run a few gallons through it befor you tested?

If it has a DI unit then 0TDS is the only acceptable amount. As it creeps up to about 5ppm over the course of several months it is time to renew it. Keep running it for awhile to see if it clears out all that new product stuff and settles in.

Wanted to add that if the restrictor is not set correctly you coul dbe getting a lot of blow by from the membrane into the DI unit and overwhelming it.

what does the "flow restrictor" look like? how do you know if it is set correctly?

On most good hobby type units, its already pre-set. Check this link out for some pretty good info...

The color of the tubing may very so be careful.

Chris,

I wish you had posted before buying. I have what's left of a Coralife unit. It was just plain junk - WAY worse quality than the fleabay units. I ended up replacing most of it, for more than if I had just replaced it with new. There aren't many products that I could recommend less... Sorry.

Get with Russ at Buckeye and he'll make parts recommendations for you.

don't most RO units need to have at least 6 gallons of water flushed before you start to use.

Chris are you sure it's a 3 stage and not a 4stage??? Most 3 stage don't come with a DI unit. Are you missing a filter or carbon stage???

I have/had a Coralife 3 stage - the DI is a cartridge that costs about 1/2 the cost of the unit - I replaced it with an add-on unit, and added a 3rd filter.

As said above, if you indeed have an RODI system, 40 ppm after the DI is pretty bad.

If you have only an RO, with a likely configuration that looks like this: Stage 1= sediment filter, Stage 2= carbon filter, Stage 3= RO membrane, then you are seeing about 94% rejection from your membrane - not great, but not horrible.

Can you provide a pic of your system, or a model number/name?
