First off welcome to maast. Glad to see new people in the hobby. Everyfish you have in the tank is to big for it. In a 10g you want no more than 2 fish max in my opinion. And the fish should be considered nano friendly. Nothing that is or get over 2" should be in a 10g. Have you done any research with books or internet, because If you had it would tell you the specifications for the fish you listed. Those specification would give you a minimum tank size which from the fish you listed will be anywhere from 55g-150g. Id suggest returning the fish and placing a proper fish or 2 in there place or upgrade to a larger tank ASAP. This may be a joke, but if not do lots of research before you buy anything else.

thanks for the welcome, i've had the tank for prob a month, and ill take a pic as soon as i can borrow a camera from my friend prob this week. Well i really didn't know too much on how many fish or size to put in my tank but i asked someone at a fish store and they told me it would be fine with the fish i have, when i bought the last fish from them, which was the blue tang...

Jack

do fish stores take "returns" on fish?

Simply do more research before you buy. If the store you are shopping at truely told you its ok to put all these fish in a 10g you should stop shopping there. They are pulling your leg and just trying to make a buck. I wouldnt be surprised if the store told you they would be ok in a 100g, but a 10g is a little over the top.

do fish stores take "returns" on fish?

Some will, some wont. They may just give you credit

Jack
Mon, 25th Feb 2008, 04:01 PM
well the guy there told me that they would be perfectly fine in a 10 gallon until i upgraded to like a 55 or 75 gallon, as long as i did it within 6months-a year. because he said the fish i have don't grow that fast

Jack
Mon, 25th Feb 2008, 04:01 PM
wow i would think people at a FISH store would actually wanna help me with fish

Mon, 25th Feb 2008, 04:03 PM
WOW!!!! None of those fish would do well in a 10gal tank by themselves, let alone all together. Without mentioning names I would avoid dealing with that lfs and try to do as much research on the fish you can keep in the tank you have. with waste produced from feeding your tank parameters will soon begin to climb and will require ALOT of water changes. As Ray stated earlier return the fish and research the types that will do good in a tank that size (small gobies, clownfish maybe a sixline wrasse). Your always welcome to hit up your fellow maastards for help as well.

Okay I'll be the one to ask. What fish store are you shopping at?

BTW, it's a good thing you know so much about sharks.

Please sell all of your fish. If not they will surely die a horrible death if they are not already about to die. 10 gallons of water for those fish is not and never would be enough. Too many casual hobbiests start off the way you are right now, with not enough information and a handful of cash. I am not trying to be rude, but I do care about the fish, and I hate unscrupulous fish stores that prey on the uninformed customer...

We need the admin's to check the ISP's of these "newbies" cause it sounds like a setup from perhaps a disgruntled former member or someone who is way to bored and seeking to set up flames!!

agree with to many fish in one tank especialy the ones you have and being that the tangs are ick prone. i have been to some LFS that try to get the sale and do not know a thing about what your buying or what to feed. the best thing to do is do research on the item you are going to get be fore you buy. better to be safe then sorry. what store was this and ask them if they will give you your money back. if not get a bigger tank asap or find someone to take care of them
also welcome to masst

hey to be perfectly honest, i wouldn't take what many of the fish store employees have to say to serious at all. like most of the other people have already said, their just trying to make a buck. the best thing to do is read read read. online, books, anywhere that has a reliable source of information. Maast and Reefcentral are excellent sites to gather information on.
On another note, do you have a water test kit? if so have you taken a reading and what are the results? Also after reading up on the fish you currently have, decide on what to do with them, whether its take them to a LFS (local fish store), there's many good ones that will help u in town, or maybe donate them to a Maast member, there a prob many that would take your fish and give them a good home, or atleast until you perhaps get a bigger tank one day...

they should be ok , if you have them in two 5 gallons instead of a 10 gallon,,,,J/K,,,i have a 40g. long you can borrow, its not big enough but atleast it bigger then the 10g..just put 3 of the fishes in there while you working on your next plan,,ASAP...

in my opinion (imo) i would sell the fish for now, before they die. and start with something a little smaller and easier to keep than the tang. i think we all really want to know what store u were shopping at

Jack, my lfs recommended an anemone. Said it was "great" "very hardy" and would "be a perfect addition to my 3 week old tank"
So, I brought it home, posted a pic of it on maast and found out the truth about anemone's - that they are the opposite of what was told to me and that the particular one I purchased would likely die and kill everything else in my brand new tank. So I took him back. Spoke with the owner (who agreed what what maast said) and he gave me store credit for livestock.

I advise you do the exact same thing.

And then start posting up all questions that come to mind. Or, you can just read all of my posts. lol Because you and I are in almost the exact same boat.

hey sorry for any confusion with me and bobby. But him and i are good friends( since highschool), and i often follow him to fish stores to check out stuff, while hanging out with him. so i got a tank, and put pretty much everything in there that i saw was cool looking. i have to admit i did go the the "****" place as bobby calls it for fish and advice. being petco, i learned they just wanted to sell me stuff. then went to fish stores and bought other fish.i do want really cool stuff, but then again i want them to last. so i took some of the fish back to a store. now that i get on here and getting blasted by everyone, i do realize i went about the whole fish thing the wrong way as i was already being told by my friend, oh well. i think im gonna look for a big tank( around one hundred gallon) so i can get some of the fish i want.... thanks for the advice though...hope other newbies made some mistakes, so im not the only one

No problem! Keep asking questions and welcome to MAAST! For a lot of people this hobby is sink or swim. If you do your research first and plan plan plan then you will be rewarded for it. If not you will spend a lot of money, kill a lot of animals, and burn out very quickly. So stick around...it only gets better...lol.

Jack,

No one really gets "blasted" - it's just we ALL went thru the same mistakes, and it's frustrating when you see others repeat your own mistakes!

As long as one remembers these things: 1) Stores are in business to sell you what you want, need, and maybe what you don't need. Some are better than others. 2) you WILL run into self-professed experts both in person and online, that can be totally wrong. 3) This is not an exact science, and the state of the hobby is continually changing - over 35 years for me, and I'm still quite often wrong. The line between fact and opinion is very, very grey.

So all these stores knew tour tank size, and said it was cool for even one of them? Wow, that sucks.
