I'll be getting a Golden Dwarf Moray Eel next week. Anyone kept these? What are you feeding?

I had a freshwater eel in my cichlid tank a few years back before we moved and had to take the tank down - it was one of my favorite fish. I'm so excited!

ya ive had one before, i would use a wooden skewer and make sure the point was not sharp at all, and impail silversides and pieces of shrimp from HEB, and wiggle them infront of the him and he would smell it and take it.

Hmmm... haven't seen that one. I ordered this one off the internet - it is 6" right now. I'll have to stop by there this weekend and check out the eel.

where did you find yours online? for what price?
Anyone know what the one at Horizon is going for?

I had one up to a few years ago. Thing was beautiful and didn't bother anything in the tank. Mine had the bright blue eyes and was gorgeous. Always ate krill with no issues for me. Been wanting to get another one but they are just so $$$$.

Keep in mind that freshwater eels are actually fish that look like eels and they really are not alike. I've found that salt water eels are even better than my fresh.

I stopped by Horizon on the way back from the MAAST meeting. The one they have is a banana eel (Gymnothorax miliaris) and I think it was @ 300.00. It will get to about 12".

which seller did you find it at?

I have had lots of salt eels and they are great. My dwarf I had tons of shrimps etc in with it and it never ate anything but the krill and ghost shrimp I gave it

I've got him in my 58 gallon with some Picasso Clownfish, Coral Beauty, Pajama Cardinals, and Purple Firefish. Also have a cleaner shrimp. All are doing well - except I need to scale back my bioload. :blushing: I fed some shrimp from the grocery store the first time. He did not get scared off by the bamboo scewer it was attached to and eats hardily. I stopped by RCA and picked up some silversides. The anemone loves the new scraps too.

All I can say is I LOVE this eel. He mainly comes out when hungry and is getting to know me. I try to feed in the same spot of the tank each time. I am curious to know how others who purchased this eel are doing with their dwarf morays.

Hey, it appears that mine has/had the same behavior, since it arrived.

I was beginning to think that mine had perished, but something had told me to just take a piece of 'silverside', thaw it in saltwater and pour a bit of the juice in the water and wait. Well, there he was; head peeping out of a hole in the coral. I then, 'hand-fed' him pieces of silverside... BOY was he hungry!

My Canon Rebel XT arrived on Friday and the 'combo-pack' arrives sometime the coming week; 53" tri-pod, 2GB CF, lens cleaner, carrying case, etc... courtesy of Amazon.com. The 'macro' lens is a totally different story... smile.

Yea, mine is very reclusive as well. It is a big eater. I feed two silver side half's a couple minutes apart.

I wondered about hand feeding :Timeout: Mine grabs the silverside and gives it such a tug that I have a hard time keeping the tongs in place. He is like a mini Jaws!

I think I may grab one or two of these eels myself. They are definitely the "missing link" for eel keeping and small tanks hahaha.

Alot of people use the stiff airline tubing like a shishkabob. Typically they won't have good eyesight, so watch your fingers or you may end up using a toe as a thumb.

Oh yeah, feeding an eel hotdogs, which incidentally look like a finger, is not recommended.

Hey, there!

I've had a chestnut moray (Enchelycore carychroa) for about a month now. He's also in the 10" range or so, living in a tunnel I made for him out of 3/4" PVC with some 45-degree elbows. He's leaving QT and heading into the big tank this Saturday. In addition to silversides, my eel is quite fond of squid . I simply bought a couple of squid at Central Market and cut them into slivers that are small enough for the eel to handle (after chasing the kids through the house with the tentacles, of course ; ). I'm trying to find a source of more bite-sized squid that he might be able to handle without the carving help from me. Maybe one of the local asian markets?

Hope that helps!

Nice Eel!

Are there stores in austin that get in a good selection of morays? I'm going to be setting up a 140 "moray tank" and will be looking for a number of the smaller species.

It just so happens that we have a gold dwarf at the Aqua-Dome right now. Held for 2 weeks, eating frozen krill, $269.99.

Thanks Hunter, I would come snatch him up but I haven't even ordered the tank yet. Do you stock a variety of morays fairly regularly? I don't recall seeing much other than snowflakes in SA stores.
