yesterday i planed to do a water change.I generaly do a 15 gallon every 2 weeks.(Its a 110g).well woke up sunday morning, everything fine, started my water change, while i was cleaning out my sump i notice my heater was broken (glass). As i was pulling it out a black cloud discharged into the water. Now at this time i didnt think much of it since i thougth it was just dust in the sump,(but later realized that it wasnt dust).I contenued on with my water chage, cleaning the glass,in which i scrape any allge that is stuck on hard.Awhile back i droped some calurpa in the tank for a tang,it planted and ever since i have to manulely pull out what has grown, and the filter pad is changed back in the sump.skimmer cup cleaned out.So that is my general water change.
Oh this time instead of the blue and white filter pad i went with a carbon filter pad.
Anyway i got done with the water change, and went shopping left the house aound 11am came back at like 5pm.
When i got home at five NOTHING was opened up.I freaked out called a friend, asked what could be wrong.
My salenty was off,it was at 1.019 OUCH.
So i started to fix it,added 2 cups ever hour or so.
Around 8pm i got the level at what i ussualy have it.1.023.
I was told by many shops that the heater breaking was fine.so i figured i has to be the salt.
I dont have the color cards to read my test kit the right way,so i dont know wht the perameters are.
Got home today from work and all my sps are bleached, zoas wont open,a wall hammer that ive had for almost 3 years all the way in its skeleton.

BUT the 2 anthias that i have are doing fine.
i have a nice size rose milli colonie that isnt all the way bleached, but almost gone,i dont know what to do with it.Should i just leave it in and see what happens?

how are you testing your salinity,, sound like you may have adjusted it too fast

darn kevin - sorry to hear this. keep doing small water changes and run carbon. keep your skimmer skimming wet. when you get it back stabilized, come see me for some stuff to fill the holes

Equipment failure is definately a nightmare, and when it does it at a bad time(like when your salinity is off) it can be disasterous. Sorry to hear about this.
A big part of what you mentioned is exactly why I like the Stealth submersible heaters. They're thermal plastic coated and wont crack, even if left on and exposed to air for a while. I had one that I forgot to unplug during a water change, and it got pretty hot, while out of water. It not only didn't break, I unplugged it for a while and then plugged it back in, and it's still running accurately.
That's a pretty significant salinity change to do in one day, and small, frequent water changes will help out a lot.
It's kind of risky to do when corals are so ticked off, but what I understand is if you have a large die off on your SPS it sometimes helps to frag it to where you've still got tissue and kind of start over with the colony.
HTH, sorry bout the long post

noooooo! thats awful. my suggestion: wait to add any replacements until you port over to the cube. if your even still considering it. whats done is done, but I hope everything survives. this thread makes me want to really change my year old glass heater that I have in one of my tanks. If I had expensive sps, Id probably consider it more. but Ive even seen the stealth heater crack completely open and start frying everything, but that was from it being only partially submersed in a sump. sometimes you can never win in this hobby, only spend more money. looks like someone is going to be working some over time; on the bright side you now have a legitimate excuse to not buy your old lady something for valentines day. *shrug*

I recently had a phosphait filter leach back into my tank while I was out of town. I lost my Chalk to a suicide jump and all of the ricordia in my tank died slow deaths with my four month old yasa goby. I really feel for you and hope you can turn it around with no more losses.

I am using the new Rena heater at Petsmart. It has a thick plastic housing and a abnormal temp. flashing warning .

I do not run a heater at all. My pumps in the sump keep my temp at 76-77 pretty much all year round.

beerguy-
my suggestion: wait to add any replacements until you port over to the cube.

working on going with that.
just need a few more things to get it up and running.
-baffels for the sump
-overflow
-more black sand
-4 24" T-5'S
-AND SOMEONE TO TRADE THEY'ER 250'S FOR MY 400'S
then later down the line a reefcontroler and a reactor for the stonies

Oh and thanks for the support guys,im far from leaving this hobbie
