A guy on RC did a build using the "foamrock" technique, and his structure turned out pretty nice. I wasn't a fan of the columns on each side at first, but after the corals get going, I think it will be a pretty sweet setup

Awesome, I will be tearing my tank down in a week or 2 for installation of a new cal flow. I might try this with the new rock work. Thanks for the link!

I have convinced my wife to get a 200 up and riunning before the year is up, and It will be fowler for the most part so I am going to definitely try this out. I don't want to buy 200-300 lbs of liverock and try to arrange it. Too expensive and too heavy. doing something lke this + 75-100 lbs of rock would be more up my financial alley.

Interesting. I didn't like the pics at first, but I think that was due to the guys lighting being so bright in the back and dark in the front. Be nice if it could be painted, then it could even be used in freshwater tanks.

you can paint it with the krylon fusion spraypaint. It comes in tons of colors.

Cool, I always had the belief that spray paint and foam didn't mix as it would actually eat away at the foam itself. Guess that was an old wive's tale as they say.
Back when Aquarium Sales & Service was open over off of 410/Blanco, they had some neat backgrounds in some of the freshwater tanks that looked like foam or some sort of latex material. It had various colors to look like rockwork and I always wondered how they did that. If I ever get around to getting a bigger tank, I'll definately play around with the foam structure idea. Maybe I'll even tear down my 29g freshwater tank and try it there with some wood and live plant ledges built into the foam.

I have done a foam scape using egg crate and foam plus the black pond foam. I then spray painted the light colored foam with black krylon fusion paint.
I have read that some people also seal it with Finishing resin and while it's wet they put aragonite sand on it....
My question is do you actually NEED to seal it with the resin???
I'd prefer not to in less there is some sort of benefit. I've read that it aids in keeping the crabs from pecking at the foam and eating it...is this true????
Thanks.
