The other day my BF took a bunch of liverock out of our aquarium and boiled it because he wanted to kill the things living on it. Can I still use it?

I'm the one who reads the books, not him.

So can I use it? Does anyone know?

It will be perfectly fine to use. Basically dead base rock, but it will liven up if you seed it with a couple of peices of Live Rock.

What do you mean by seed it?

I thought it was funny too. Thanks for the help though.

When you put it back in the tank just make sure LR is touching it.

I would think all that dead stuff in and on the rock is going to cause a cycle in the tank.

The rock was boiled so what ever was on there is not going to cause I cycle because its basically been sanitized. Now what ever Live rock he ads will cause a cycle. The cycle could be small or large depending on rather the rock is cured or uncured.

Even though the rock was boiled and the exterior was killed off, theres still a chance that the contents of the micro fine porousity on the interior may contain some die-off, I would still be concerned about some type of cycle.

I would find me a trashcan put all the boiled rock in it add a few pieces of LR and Saltwater to it and let it sit for about 6 weeks. Make sure you have a powerhead or some kind of pump for water movement and a heater.
Or, if you want to get back at him, put this in his bathtub.

I would certainly be cautious about how much one adds at a time. Your system IS going to have to process whatever organic material is still in the very porous rock.

Tell him you will never eat his cooking again! Tell him rock is not suitable as food and that it is just as bad as ramen.

Make him replace the rock :)

I gotta say... I hope you never let him hear the end of this one! Not good!
