I know this is a saltwater forum but who else would know more about lighting than saltwater people.

Anyway, I have a freshwater tank and want to upgrade the lighting, so that I may grow some plants, etc. It's a 46 gallon bowfront (18 inches deep).

I was looking at a T5 setup at RCA but are they better at growing plants and displaying the colours of the fish than Power Compact Fluorescents? I also want to keep the cost to around 150 to 200 dollars.

Another question I have, since I've been given different answers, do PC's run hotter than T5's.

I'd really like some unbias replies from those that have used both type of lights.

Thanks

PC's are a Ubent T5HO. On comparison T5HO lamps are usually made better than PC's, (Which means they last longer) they are cheaper to replace and you can get individual reflectors which make them brighter. In the long run if you have to pay more for the T5HO fixture it will pay for it self in time.

I would go with 4 t5hos, and I think your tank is 36 inches wide so you would go with a 36 inch fixture. You will spend slightly less on a t5 most likely. Look on ebay. 36 inch fixture 4xt5ho for 100 bucks, you can go a liitle bit better for about 200, but you'll definitely pay 2-300 for pc lights and they dont even compare. the color isn't as good, and they get hot enought to fry eggs on.

yes PCs run hotter than T5s,, as far as plant growth, it really depends on what type of t5 you go with

I have a GLO 36 inch on my saltwater setup, and they are great. they sell a freshwater setup for about 125 retail, and about 80-100 on ebay. I don't know how great they are for plants, but the front of the box has the light on a planted tank. haha, i don't know. I love them.

Oldgrind, you should post some pics! A few reefers on here do have freshwater planted tanks!
