Another thread brought this to my attention.

If you were to change one thing about your aquarium now that it is up and running what would it be. I know some of us would change a few things, but name that one important thing you should have done. I will go first.

** DRILL my freaking tank. **

Ive drilled my smaller tanks, but when I set up the 210g I was in too much of a hurry and now have a HOB overflow which works but is a pain sometimes not to mention less reliable compared to a drilled system. Have been thinking about removing everything to do this in the near future for peace of mind.

Wish I woulda went with a brick instead of a bowfront. Too limiting in terms of space below the tank and the canopy (light installation issues).

3' wide instead of 2' - allows for more interesting aquascape.

Well, since I bought mine off ebay and was sort of given some things I really didn't have a choice over, how about the classic put the live rock in before the sand so I could have better positioned my pillars!! And newbies think they make all the mistakes!!

Lee

If I were to do it from scratch, I would want my stand to be about 3' longer than my tank and have an enclosed space for electronics and storage where water/equipment wouldn't be. Plus the top of the stand would have a granite or soapstone top for working on.

A nice halide, lots of clams, and a crew of midgets to maintain water quality and feed said clams.

I would like a regular stand (hollow in the middle) instead of book shelfs that cant storage or hide any equipment..

Add 1000 gal storage tank with real ocean sea water for quick changes. Or if it were closer to the ocean a saltwater well with industrial ozonizer.

Having a proper sump/refugium made instead of making due with a wet/dry.

How about I should have put my new 90g right in the middle of the living room instead of hiding it on the wall. That way I would alrady have it finished and would not be staring at an almost possibly could be should be full tank

If I could do it all over... I would have bought my stuff new from a local store. Anything and everything. Tunzes, external pumps, TANK... the list could go on of what has failed on me. I have learned that the warranty that comes with items is pretty dang nice! If it possibly can break or go out, it does for me.

yeah, sometimes buying new is like paying for insurance

I wouldn't have spent time trying to build an overflow, and just buy one like I ended up doing. Easier access to sump. Other than that I have exactly what I expected. I try to never buy something new either, waste of money. Usually you can buy something 3 time over for the price you pick it up second hand, and gives me the opportunity to try a variety of things outside my price range. One day when I feel a little more qualified I will take on a larger investment.

coraline79 reminded me of when I tried to build a calcium reactor. Never again! It would have been cheaper just to buy the Geo I have now from the start. Set it and forget it is much better than fixing leaks every other day.

To piggyback on Richards note: NO UGLY PALYS IN THE TANK! The yellow stars taking over I can deal with. But UGLY PALYS???? Nope.
