what is a calcium reactor and what is it used for? how is it typically used in a tank?

A calcium reactor is used to maintain alkalinity and calcium in a reef tank, mainly alkalinity. They are used in conjunction with a C02 tank (whats used to slowly melt the media which releases alk and calcium), Regulator. You can get some good info here:
