Free dog to a good home

I took in this dog/puppy after finding it while out in the country with some friends a few weeks ago. I couldn't just leave him there to starve, so I've kept him for a few weeks and now it's time for him to find a new home. As far as his breed, I think he is a Catahoula. He's still young and has a bit of the clumbsy puppy to him even though he is good size. He will be a great pet with some attention and training. Unfortunately, I don't have the time/energy for him. He is not gun shy so he could also make a good hunting dog. If I don't find anyone here that wants him, I'm taking him to an animal shelter.

Why don't you take him to a rescue center? There are many in SA.

Oh man! If I was settled into my own place I would take him in a heartbeat. I have a catahoula now and I love him! Do you know if he gets along with other dogs or cats by any chance? If I know of anyone I will be sure to let you know!

There is a difference between an animal shelter and a rescue organization. Rescue organizations usually rescue dogs from animal shelters.

AprilMayJune - I haven't had any other cats or dogs so I couldn't say for sure. He's still a bit of a pup so I would think he could learn to interact with them.

Labrown - Again, doesn't a rescue center and an animal shelter serve the same purpose? To take an animal in, give it care if needed, and then try to find a good home for it? If you were inferring that I was going to take him to the city pound where he would be put to sleep if no one took him, then you are sadly mistaken. I took this dog in as someone had dumped him out in the country. I want him to have a good home as he is a good dog.

Well he escaped through my fence (still have a small section that hasn't been replaced yet) twice this afternoon so I need to find a home soon before my neighbor takes me to the city pound! LOL

Usually rescue centers have volunteer foster homes that take the dog instead of keeping them in a shelter with other dogs. That way they can get to know them (for instance, if they get along with other pets or children) and then place them in the best possible home, in hopes that the dog won't have to be rehomed again. In no way did I incinuate that you would take the dog to a kill center. I don't think you would do that if you were willing to take in a dog that you found. The original post was only suggesting that there are breed specific rescue organizations in your area that would most likely do the best job at placing the pup in a forever home.
