I was just wondering the difference between a Ocellaris Clownfish, a True Percula, and a False Percula? i have two and i dont know if they are the same kind. i got them at 2 pet shops. they are always together and one is smaller than the other, and they've been like that for almost a year. i tried searching but came up short. Thanks

look at the color patterns. Type each in google and select "images."

First off the ocellaris is the same as the false percula. (A. ocellaris) The true percula (A. percula) usually has a larger darker black band around the whilte stripes. Also if I'm not mistaken the number of dorsal spines between the two is different. I think the percula has like 9-10 and the ocellaris 11-12, not too sure though. I used to have a book somewhere that had all the differences. Info should be on the web. The size difference will always be present. Female clownfish are always bigger than the males. If you have more than 2 you will have 1 female and 1 male. The others will be unsexed. If your female dies the male will turn into the female and the other fish will turn into a male. Weird huh!!!!

yeah i tried looking but some of the pics look the same, tried reading but came up with one is tank raised and the other is from the ocean?? the reason i ask is beacuse i see may people on here have their clowns mating but i have not seen mine doing that, they dont even hide in the rock they just hang outat the bottom left of the tank close to where they sleep, which is right next to the glass (they dug a hole in the sand)

yea, i was talking with a guy at a petshop in Corpus about that, i think its pretty cool, when the female dies one the male becomes a female and who ever is next in line will become the male

Here's a good link to tell the difference. If you look at the pcitures closely you can count the spine. Also notice the dark bars around the true perc.

Probably not the most solid basis to judge them by, but I find most true percula to have the orange ring around their eyes, as well as a more "tangerine peel" color to their bodies, whereas False Percs usually have all-black eyes and a darker shade of orange to them.

Just my personal observations.
