does the fox faced rabbit fish's color change to a ugly brown at night? the reason i asked is when i woke up this morning and turned on the light he was a pale ugly brown almost translucent but 1 min later he was back to his beautiful color.

Haha. Nice.
I hope I didn't confuse you in your cleaner wrasse post when I said foxfaces turn brown due to stress. They will change colors at night as well but that is normal. I thought you meant since you added in the cleaner wrasse he kept turning brown in the daytime while the cleaner wrasse was around.

Vlamingii Tangs get some great night time colors as well. Many fish can go paler or darker even during the day and the thought is the color change helps some of the cleaners find parasites easier!
My Pinktail Trigger can go very pale when he lays down for the peppermint shrimp to clean him.

i think it may also be a signal to the cleaner that it is safe to start cleaning - along with the strange posture of spread out fins and listing to the side.

Probably so. It's interesting to sit and watch fish and all their posturing like that when they see their reflections in the glass. Makes you wonder if certain fish species have certain postures they use to communicate or if it's a universal language among all fish. Then again, maybe it's just me that wonders weird things like that, lol

My Skunk cleaner shrimp would hang upside down on our Fox Face while it was swimming. Pretty cool. . .
