There are way to many variables to give an honest answer but generally 6+ WPG makes for a good SPS tank.

yea, there really isnt a set number. I also think 6+ is good.

Depth of tank is the most important part of this equation. There is a huge difference between watts per gallon required if the tank is 18", 20", 24", or 29" or over in depth.

I am keeping SPS in a 55g tank with 260w CF lighting. Most of my sps are up higher, and they are doing fine. Red Acro, Green acro, Green Slimer, Green Cap. They are not growing fast but they are doing good. Although the green cap isnt doing the greatest due to my mistake :/ I did a water change and dumped the water on him by accident, it made it slime and turn half white ? It is getting his green back though.... The rest are doing fine with about 5w per gallon.

Ok on a side note in the same topic. I read on reef central that actinics where mostly for show as they had no real value on coral growth. So my question is Would a set up with a 175 MH and 2 vho 75 w actinics be 6 watts per gal or 3.2 watts per gal on a 54 gal tank?
