I bought a beautiful Yellow Eyed tang yesterday from Aquarium Designs. After aclimating him he is now in my 210g with a few other fish including A Large Blue Hippo and a large Sailfin. My question is for those who have exp with them or similar cleaning typed tangs. I know this fishes mouth naturally potrudes but can they not close their mouths at all? They are one of a few tangs that eat detritus (fish poop) which is really cool, and compared to the hippo and the sailfin this thing is constantly grazing especially the glass. Im going to order some MAcro-Feast and Fuzzy-Phytes from Reef Nutrition to feed to my tangs and other herbivores. I currently feed Formula 1 and 2, Reef Formula, Shrimp, Clams, and live Macro. Is this species as prone to ich like the Blue Hippo or Powders? Ive read up on them before posting this but I find first hand exp is valuable info as well. Any other info I should know about this neat tang?

I've had a good sized one for about 6 months. He's always swimming around like a madman. He always grazing on the glass, too. I'm pretty sure he can close his mouth, though. I guess I never really noticed.

Fortunately, I haven't had any breakouts of ich in the tank, so I don't know if I can help you there. (I have a yellow tang and had a hippo in there with him, and they never got ich, either.) I have a cleaner shrimp in there that takes care of the yellow tang, but he can't get close enough to the yellow eye to clean him. (Like I said, he swims around like a madman!) Cool fish!

After your post I ran down stairs and took a flashlight to the tank and found him with his mouth closed, lol. Good to know that he is ok.

Ray, I had a blenny get to close to a koralia. It got into the flow and it snapped it's jaw wide open. It was like that for about three days, I think it was sore. Maybe this is what happened?

I dont think anything was actually wrong with it. It wasnt misshapend or anything it just constantly had its mouth open, but from what Ive read this morning its actually normal because they use the mouths like a vacume. Neat fish. He looks just like the one in the pic. Ive yet to find a pic without their mouths being opened.

Now I have

Tangs:
1- 6-7" Blue Hippo
1- 5" Sailfin
1- 2" 1/2-3"

Wrasses:
1- 6" Christmas
2- 4"-6" Bird

Triggers:
1- 2" Picasso
1- 3" Niger

Rabbitfish
1- 6" Foxface

Eels:
1- 20-22" Snowflake

Even with these half of the tank always seems to be empty open space. But the fish love it. The Two bird wrasses race around the tank making ripples on the surface. Great to watch.

Almost done. Still want to add my favorite fish The Harlequin Tusk, A Angel Imperator or Blue Face and one more eel most likely Zebra or Yellow head. This is all subject to change of corse, lol.

Whats funny is all but 2 of those fish have come from Fellow maastards taking down their aquariums.

Yeah, sigh, I had to go with a tad smaller bioload. I added all of the rock and my puffer didn't like it since tank has been rockuascaped for the tangs. I can't wait to move, but only because I want a bigger tank. :)

Yep a 75g becomes to small the day you buy it. Im sure when you have the room you are going to go all out. Im already planning my next tank of 300-400g; wont be for another 4-5yrs though.

Id like to know Ace's fish list in the 240g. Everytime I visit I see a few I didnt the time before, lol. Too many hiding places.

Yeah, I want a ten foot tank, but I may just go with a couple of 200s side by side, drilled and plumberd all together with bulkheads and pvc in the side glass so the fish can swim in both tanks.

$1500 at glasscages.com

I like a few on here have bought from them and was very happy with my tank. I cant and choose not to imagine how heavy it will be when the time comes.

1500 is fairly inexpensive.... I am kind of suprised. :)
I do like those specs as well, not too deep to reach down in. I need a house.

36" wide tank, imagine the rock scape! For me it will be a inwall next.

Yeah, that is a foot wider than my current tank. It would be great.

Well as someone that owns a 84x31.5x36 I can tell you that 36" wide may sound cool but...

Then there is this guy that I may have bought my tank from that ordered a 900g or so tank that was longx36xtall only to find that it wouldn't fit through his doors.

Keep the fact in mind that average door sizes are 32" wide at the maximum. You might have a fancy one-off front door or French doors somewhere in the house, but if you don't it won't look good in your garage.

good point mike, many older homes(pre 60's) and some modern homes(usually more high end) will have a 36" front door, but the modern standard for production type houses is 32". this is were a patio door comes in handy!

what about the side gate? Are they large enough?

Water weighs 8.6lbs per. gallon so make sure your foundation can handle it too. Some insurance company may not covers if somehting would happen to the foundation..

My side gate is wide enough for a 36" tank. It will not be upgrading for a few years but when I do by then I will have my double open french doors, So i will be good to go.

Depending upon how the tank is braced, it may hold up on it's side for a few minutes of maneuvering. I'd be a bit worried about that much weight being unsupported if you were to flip it on it's side to get it through the door.

Well, I guess the little guy wasnt ok. He died this morning after only 3 days. I found him barely breathing being blown around by the flow in the tank. This bites. He has no signs of illness; just wasnt eating well and hiding a lot. I know what to look for when purchasing so I guess I can blame myself. I know to look for a fish that is eating, active and not showing signs of ick or other illnesses. This guy was hiding in a cave but looked healthy and I was told he was eating so I went for it. You know ive shopped at Aquarium Designs a few times but have never bothered to ask about a guarantee or return policy when talking to Jason. Man I love that store, always a great visit; anyways anyone know what their guarantee is if any? I wrote them a email but I know they are closed today so I dont expect a response back today.

He will probably knock some dollars off your next purchase. Take him a sample of your water so he knows that you know what you are doing. Jason is a great guy, I am sure he will be more than willing to help. Sucks though. :(

yea Jason and his dad are upstanding guys; I will give him a call tommorow to see what I can do. I know most stores that are not corporate usually dont have guarantees on Live animals.

I called. As I figured, no guarantee. Impluse buys will bite you in the butt almost 99% of the time.
