I just set up my first "grown-up" lights:) ... a 48” PC florescent system. It’s a HUGE improvement over the single tube I’ve been running. Even my wife loves it:) It’s got 2 12000 K sunlight, 2 true blue actinic, 4 moonlights and two small cooling fans.
Anyway … its VERY hot … the top of the entire fixture is hot to the touch when the sunlight’s and blues have been on a while. I have it set up in a hood about 8” tall and am concerned I’m going to burn it up before I get to put anything cool in my tank. The hood is backless, so it is not entirely enclosed. Is that amount of heat normal?

i'm sure that it wouldn't hurt if you put a small desk fan behind the canopy. Try to blow the air across the entire unit. This will help a little.
cheers,

Yep add a couple of 4" fans to your hood to bring in fresh cool air and your heat will disapear.

I fry my elbow just about once a week. A little sizzle is always nice.

It's a no-name. Got it at AD and they've never steered me wrong yet ($200.00 ... pretty cheap). I thought if the heat of the lights was going to be an issue then they'd mention it.
That is the kind of info that one can easily forget, however, and I just wanted to make sure. By the way ... good morning folks ... now I know who I can expect to see online by 8:00 :)

I hate to do this to AD as so many people like to shop there and they are a very nice shop in SA but, Oddysea lights are known for burning down houses. The ballasts tend to quit working at about exactly one year. Enough of them have gone up in flames that it's not just an internet rumor. I've replaced the ballasts in over 20 Oddysea/Jebo lights for other members here at MAAST (this is fact not slander), 3 for friends that bought them and do not participate here, and about 15 or so for a company in ATX that wholesales that product line both online and to retailers in the area.
The fixture in almost every light setup gets hot, gets very hot, it's the poor ballasts in that brand that are the trouble makers. Plan on switching the ballast out later, I can squeeze the Fulham Workhorse 5 or 7 into almost any Jebo/Oddysea fixture. You'll lose one moonlight LED in the process so keep this in mind if one day a bulb or 2 no longer fire off.
