I'm about to order a replacement for my Rio 600 water pump that came with my bakpak a couple of years ago. It just stopped working the other day.

Should I just get a Rio 1100 ($21) as a decent replacement or is a different brand more reliable?

I'm not sure about the new Rio's but the old ones used to "nuke" tanks. I would use a compatible Mag pump.

there are only 3 recommended pumps for the cpr bakpak

the rio 600 (quietest by faaaar) and i believe rio has gotten rid of most of their past problems

the maxijet 1200 (best middle of the road pump for this skimmer IMO)

and the accella ASP1-1000 (very loud but very functional)

ive ran all 3 on my bakpak

i dont think i would try a rio 1100

Rio's problems are pretty much a thing of the past. I'd go with Tony's recommendation - he really knows how to get the most out of the bakpaks.

if you go with the mj you will also need to either mod (http://www.cprusa.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2875&sid=c5d1cca8bd5d3eb8f3df82332410fa65) it, buy one of these (http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=MJ-VENT&Category_Code=), or figure out some other way to get the airline to stay in it.

jimd also has info on an airstone mod that will make the skimmer more efficient. i havent performed it on mine but ive heard good things about it.

Actually, the Rio 800 with the venturi is probably the best pump for that skimmer.

any reason for that? is the 600rv different from a regular 600? im guessing its just the venturi

this is from cpr's website:

The Bak-Pak models currently come with either the Rio 600RV or the Maxi-jet 1200RV. Both pumps operate the skimmer efficiently. We have made an option available for the hobbyist to choose their preference. If you are satisfied with the Rio 600RV, you should continue to use this pump. The Rio 800RV has a slightly different impeller design and does not work as well as the 600RV.

(obviously written before the released the accella last fall)
