I just graduated and I am moveing back home for six months in the mean time I have to down grade to a 45 gallon hex that I modified to be reef ready. I curently have 2 400 watt MH running on by big tank. Could I use one of those lights on the hex tank if so how fare should I put it above the water.

How tall is the 45 and what do you intend to house in it? 400 watts of metal halide is a lot of light!

A 400w above that tank would be a lot, you could hang it pretty high but a lot of the light would probably be spread beyond the tank

I am definitely not an english major so I will be sure to write things in word before post anything lol! I was worried about it being to much light. The other light that I have is a JBJ 110 watt pc. All I have is a yellow tang two clowns two chromis, Kenya trees and an anemone.

What kind of anemone? How deep is the tank?

see the more egamacated u get the worse you get with spelling.

I had a 400w halide above a 54 gallon corner tank. tank was 24 inches deep. halide was nine inches off the surface of the water. corals responded well. ric's hated it!
cheers,

Kurt

You don't have to use Word. The forums have a built in spell checker... just look to the upper right hand corner of the text editor.

I had two 400 watters above a standard 75 gallon at one point and most was fine. I just needed to keep the low light corals lower.
You could run a higher K bulb also like a 15 or 20. Radiums would be great if the ballast will run them.

This will require a chiller, no?

I didn't have one at the time, just a couple of good fans blowing across the water.
