LOL all in good time. All I need to order is my skimmer (EuroReef RS135), my T5 bulbs (1/2 Gieseman Pure Actinic, 1/2 Gieseman Actinic +), and my 4 Koralia 4's. Everything else, I already have...
Tomorrow the plan is to start doing the foam for the "foamrock" structure, and paint the back of the tank black. Then I am going to start building the lightbox and get all the lighting mounted and wired. This weekend is going to be crazy though with our sale going on.
Stay tuned

Those of you following along- we've been getting ready for the sale at the store all week, so there hasn't been any progress than finishing up the PVC "foamrock" structure. Today was the sale (thanks all y'all that showed, great turnout) but I did start on spraying the structure with Great Stuff (cheaper at Wlamart than HD BTW). Sprayed on one can, and tossed a bunch of sand on the foam while it was still wet. I'll finish it up tomorrow, providing it doesn't rain, and paint the back.

I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow

MissT
Sat, 15th Dec 2007, 11:30 PM
honestly, it sounded like fun. I haven't done this before and Texreefer's tank turned out great, so I thought I'd give it a shot. There's going to be liverock in the tank too, and a bunch in my sump.

MissT

Well, I'm 5 cans of Great Stuff in, probably have 2 cans left to go... basically, the PVC foamrock structure will occupy the top 1/2 of the tank, it has one large shelf at the top between the overflow boxes, and one in front of the overflow boxes on each end. I tossed some sand on the foam while it was still wet, but there's definately more yellow than black for now. Underneath the structure will be some liverock and an open sandbed for brains and probably some other LPS.
Pic of most of the foamrock structure (still in the works)
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a391/SmokeStew20/001-1.jpg

I also put on the first coat of stain. I'll do one more then probably 3 coats of varnish.
Here's a pic of that:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a391/SmokeStew20/003-1.jpg

I still have to paint the back of the tank black as well, and do all the plumbing but I'm shooting for 3 weeks to having water in it.

Finally got the second coat of stain on, and the foamrock structure is ready to go. I've been slacking on it, so I still have a lot to do, but I should have some time next week to get back on it.

And a question: anyone know anything about wiring computer fans to a power source for mounting in the stand?

MissT
Thu, 27th Dec 2007, 09:54 PM
Well last week was crazy with Christmas and everything, but I managed to put a little work on the tank in last night and tonight.
I put together the standpipes and returns today, but of course forgot a couple of fittings, so it looks like I'll be going back to Home Depot tomorrow morning.
This afternoon I started the plumbing on a nice DSA brick 185, so that motivated me to get the plumbing going with mine. Hopefully it will go on the stand this weekend...
Sorry no pictures, I'm using the "no batteries in the camera" excuse

MissT
Thu, 10th Jan 2008, 09:59 PM
Haven't done much to the tank, but it is in place and I do have one picture of the tank and stand, now that the stand is stained and put back together. The foamrock structure is in place and the bottom will be filled in with liverock.
Hopefully my T5 bulbs will be in by the beginning of next week, and I can get the light hood completed. Plumbing is underway, and going as I have time. I originally planned on putting the tank in a completely different room, but that changed so now I have to get my new cichlid tank cycled so that I can move the 55 and finish up the plumbing.
Sorry about the bad picture, but I wanted to give a quick update:

Adding on to yesterday's update:

-I'm planning on getting a JBJ ATO run on a MJ600 for auto top off.
-I've been doing a little bit of research on the Eheim dosing pumps; anyone have any experience with these?
-The sump I have is just not going to work out, so I have to get a new one (hoping to get Ace to get me taken care of in that right) I'll be selling the one I was going to use
-Thinking about adding a Calcium reactor to the system off the bat (was planning on adding that later)

This is turning into the 2nd longest build ever (ahem, Mike)

What I have for the lighting so far...

250w SE PFO pendant (thanks, BB123)
250w PFO ballast
2 x Glo HO T5 dual 39w retro kits (runs 4x39w HO T5 bulbs total)

Will have:
LED Lunar lights (4 blue on timer, 4 red on a switch)
2 x 39w Giesemann Actinic +
2 x 39w Gieseman Pure Actinic
Glo T5 Reflectors

I'm going to set up the lighting with this combination and may switch out 2 of the T5 bulbs with a daylight bulb of some sort (10k most likely) to get a little more growth for the first few months.
Anyway, here's the picture

So, having the day off yesterday was fairly productive as far as the tank goes... I completed all of the plumbing, and began framing out the light hood. I'm still trying to make a few decisions on the sump and fuge baffle configurations, so they're on hold, pending getting someone to build them for me. Dimensions are decided (stand made the decision for me) and they will be: sump- 23 x 18 x 16 and fuge- 18 x 12 x 12.
I plumbed one of the drains to a T, majority of the water going straight down to the sump and some going to a ball valve for flow control and into the fuge. Fuge will be set up higher than the sump and will be drilled to be gravity fed into the sump's return chamber.
Pics of the plumbing:

Quick update
- New sump will be ready tomorrow!!!
- Got a refugium today, and it happens to be the PERFECT size
-Decided against building the lightbox myself ; I broke down and ordered one to match the stand for the tank
- Ordered my Auto Top off sensors and relay

I'm going to paint the inside of the stand with Killz, and will do the same to the canopy once it arrives. I'll still need to stain the canopy when it gets here and install all the lighting.

I had bought a used Mag18 to try out for the return and yesterday when I went to plug it in, it didn't work so... after taking it apart, I find the intake full of sand with a broken impeller shaft. :at_wits_end: So I guess I'm going to have to order a new impeller just to find out whether the thing works or not or just buy a whole new pump....

Misti - I think I have a used Mag 18, don't order anything until I can check later tonight.

I thought ahead and filled the PVC structure with sand and foamed in the ends, made "feet" with dried out liverock, and then put on the first layer of foam. While it was still wet, I nested some medium sized pieces of rock on all the shelves, and let it dry. I sprayed on a light layer of Krylon Fusion Satin Black, and let that dry. After another layer of foam, I added more rock, and repeated the process of painting, and letting it cure. Tonight, I put some larger pieces of some ugly dried out base rock, and filled in be gaps with a final layer of foam, making what amounts to a large foam/rock structure that will be siliconed to the botom glass and overflow boxes. It's already been painted one last time...
This took a long time to do, but I'm extremely happy with how the structure turned out. If this sucker floats, I'll put it on display at the store for all to see LOL

Aside from all the work, I'm really excited and geared up to get this thing going! The closer it gets to completion, especially already having the framework for the aquascape completed, the more I look at the tank, and think about coral selection and placement.
Hopefully I've covered all my bases, so the tank can be everything I'm hoping for.

Here's another spec rundown for a refresher

Furniture:
-115 gallon Oceanview Custom 36 x 24 x 30
-Pine stand, stained on the outside, freshly KILLZ'd on the inside, tank sits at 38"
-Matching Pine canopy, 12" tall, with front door access

Equipment:
- Custom 22.5 x 18 x 16 sump
- Custom refugium (gravity feeds into sump return)
- Dual Sensor ATO on MJ600, 5 gal resevoir
- Calcium Reactor TBD
- Milwaukee MA957 Regulator
- 5# CO2 tank
- Milwaukee SMS 122 pH controller
- Mag 18 Return pump (maybe...)
- PFO Pendant & Ballast, lamp TBD
- 4 x 39w Giesseman T5's on Glo ballasts
- Current Lunar lights
- 8 x SilenX fans (in canopy and stand)

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but thanks everyone for tagging along and watching my build progress!

MissT

It's really hard to see the depth in this picture, but for reference, the top of the picture is about 6-8" below the top trim of the tank, and the bottom of the picture is at the bottom, 24" lower. There's a "ramp" that goes down from the left side down to the botom, and 2 small "shelves" on the right side, staggered like stairs.
blah blah blah, here's the pic

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a391/SmokeStew20/003-4.jpg

It really doesn't look like much now, but last year's TOTY before and after pictures make me feel that this will work, and inspire me to reach that bar.

I gotta thank a few people though for helping me gain the knowledge to make this thing possible

Carlos, thanks for giving me a chance, and being patient while I learn!

Mike for taking the time to help me figure out the "foamrock" concept

Ace, for building the sump on such short notice

Craig, for having the PERFECT size fuge laying around!

MAAST for having a great place to learn, share, and enjoy this wicked little hobby

I didn't mean that to sound like a Grammy acceptance speech, but without all the help from everyone, I'd undoubetly be in first for loooooooongest tank build LOL

I just added about 30# of cured liverock from one of my other tanks into the tank, and another 15# in the fuge. I got the sand stirred up pretty good while messing around with it, so I'll try to fet some updated pics tomorrow when it settles. After a few weeks, I'm going to add more liverock, but most of what I want to add has coral of some sort on it, so I'll wait until the tank has settled in a bit to put that in.
My canopy isn't going to be in for another couple of weeks, so I'm perching a PC fixture over the tank in the meantime. Once the canopy gets here I'll stain the outside and KILLZ the inside, then mount in all the lighting and fans.

Exciting news! (for me at least)
I got my Mag18 replacement pump in today- Carlos, you're the best!
I can finally take off the borrowed Mag7 that's been barely turning the water over the last week or so.

Saw the first copepod I've seen yet in the tank. WooHoo:rofl:

I do have to say though: I'm having bad tank envy today because TexReefer's tank came in today and OMG. A foot longer than mine... a foot WIDER than mine, and 6 inches shorter. MIKE, THAT THING IS SWEEEEET

Don't really have anything to take pictures of, since I'm just letting it sit for a couple weeks... while I twiddle my thumbs. Then I'll add more liverock, and the clean up crew. looks good...why the foam as oppose to rock?

Since the tank is so "boxy" it would have been difficult getting rock to stack without taking up too much real estate. Plus, the idea I had for the structure of the reef was pretty particular and I could lay it out exactly how I wanted... Plus it was something I hadn't done before and wanted to take a shot at.

so since getting the lighting on, I've been slowly moving corals over from other tanks, and of course acquiring a few new ones, and the tank is doing really well. water params are testing at:
salinity: 1.026
pH: 8.2
KH: 9
Ca: 420
Mag: 1340
No detectable ammonia, nitrite, nitrate or phosphates.

Not having anything swimming around was getting to me though, so my first fish is now drip acclimating...

new fish is in the tank, I fed some cyclops a few minutes after introducing him, mostly for the coral, but he chowed down like a champ! Time will tell, and I know, I know, I'm horrible at the patience game, but no more fish for a couple weeks. This one will keep me happy for a while

It's some sort of lettuce algae that hitch hiked on some liverock in my biocube. It doesn't grow super fast, but it cool looking, and non invasive, so I pulled it out and threw it in the fuge.

thanks... the duncans are more of a pink than purple, but it's probably my favorite coral in the tank, and gets fed a LOT!
I love the blastos, got them from erebus, and have been really happy with them.

I love the duncans, my favorite coral by far, I am accumulating them.
I feed mine 3-4 days per week directly, plus whatever they pick up on their own.

I walked in the front door of my hose tonight, and of course dropped my keys and went straight up to the tank, and it literally looked like someone stood a foot away from the tank with a can of spraypaint... Pods everywhere! It's a wonderful thing!

good god! is foaming hard or expensive? thats freaking awesome! i like your idea though to construct the foam to be high, and build the bottom of with live rock, that seems healthy for your tank with the same freedom of creating what you want.
