Call the store and see if you can take it back if it was a mistake. I saw those there this weekend and thought they were labeled wrong.

The yellow mimic tangs are also known as chocolate tangs. They have more of the standard tang shape (longer body) to them compared to regular yellow tangs. They are yellow when they are young to look like lemonpeel angelfish which are apparently less tasty to predetors. As they mature, they turn more of a golden brown color. They eat all the same things as other tangs with a lot of nori/dried seaweed. Another difference between the mimic tang and the regular yellow tang is the mimic tang will get a little bit larger.

I had a chocolate tang a couple years ago and always liked it.

3-4 years in the 29 or in the soon to be 55? I'd consider a 55 to be too small for a yellow tang permanently

Wow, a 29g tank? I know the ones a saw at the store this past Saturday were small, but there is no way I would keep them in a 29g tank for 3 to 4 years. Besides that they can get big, tangs like to swim and therefore need room.

So how many fish do you have in this 29g tank now?

be sure to supplement the tank with garlic when you feed so that way you can somewhat avoid getting an ick outbreak. be sure to add nori, roman lettuce, greens etc... good luck with tang just keep a good eye on fish and especially him. i would personally stop with the fish buying since you don't want to cramp it. wait till the bigger setup then transfer the ones that require more space to it.
good luck

the nori / dried seaweed is a great reccomendation, but the romaine, from what I know and understand, is not a good choice.

Sounds to me that you are shopping at a bad store. Our last meeting was about buying fish and corals and what to look out for. A store that tells you a tang is ok in a 29g= Bad Buisness. Just out to make a buck, does not care what happens to your tank or the fish.

Sorry about your tang. I've got one that's starting to put on his mature colors. Very neat fish.

Tangs can be iffy. I lost the first couple that I had (tangs in general, not Chocolates) The first one, a cole, died after a couple of days for no apparent reason. The second, also a cole, I killed by re-arranging a rock on top of him (nothing like that to make you feel stupid). The third one was a success, sort of. He was a scopas, and was lots of fun untlil I upgraded to a larger tank. When I moved him over, he freaked out and bashed himself to death against the walls. I didn't have one for about two years after that.

The Choc, on the other hand, is way cool, and has a great personality. I've had him for about six months or so. Other than chasing the algae blenny, he doesn't bother anybody.

Sorry to hear the tang didn't make it, I hate losing a fish. I would suggest holding off on anymore fish purchases until you upgrade your tank and then hopefully you will have better luck.
