Taking pictures......fun and free
Talking about your tank....... more fun and free
Submitting for TOTM...... easy and free
Seeing your tank win TOTY an over $1000.00 in prizes.......... P R I C E L E S S !!!!
I have received this for my measly $25 yearly fee:

so my only question is ........ what is stopping you from paying your $25 and entering your tank for TOTM?
Thanks again MAAST!

I won an $800 skimmer for $5 at a raffle, thanks MAAST, RCA and Carlos. I took advantage of other offers to get coral frags, raffle tickets and other swag by paying for my 2008 dues back around May of 2007. With my $25 I won from my TOTM awards I asked that it be directed for my 2009 dues (still waiting to hear back about that). And not to forget the hundreds I've saved at the LFS's.

From now on I'm getting Steve and the 2 Mike's to purchase my raffle tickets!
Even without the prizes, it's still a good deal with the LFS discounts, it allows for having monthly meetings, and it keeps our wonderful website running.

How does one become "Chartered"?
fjr_wertheimber
Wed, 30th Jan 2008, 10:06 PM
To get "Chartered" you pay your yearly dues ($25) either via PayPal or in person at the meeting (or via snail mail). Well worth the $ IMHO.
Oh, and then you have to learn the secret handshake. And then... wait, I can't tell you about that last one until after you join. Don't worry, it's only illegal in 23 states. It was 22, but Alaska decided to be "progessive" in its legislation. Really.
(No, not really. It's a joke. But the $25 IS well worth it, no joke.)

I recently became a Charter Member and will say that as a web member for the last six months I have earned the $25 membership fee back time and time again from all of the hookups and unlimited advice from the seasoned veterans of this club.
The $25 donation was the least I could do....and after paying it a whole new world just opened up....it's like playing a video game and I unlocked a few doors. I was dieing to see what was inside the forums that I couldn't get access to as a web member LOL. 10% off every time I shop at a sponsor's shop too...and that adds up for sure!
Thanks Maastards.

It's not a bad idea but it just creates more for our already-overloaded treasurer. Also, not trying to sound rude or condescending...For what most Charters have saved...$25 is a drop in the bucket. My first tank set-up as a Charter Member, I saved twice the dues.

If your in the hobby, even for 6 months, you'll easily get that $25 back at least twice. All of the sponsers give great discounts.

To the best of my knowledge there are only 3 types of memberships: junior, full and sponsor. Each of these memberships are yearly. Here is an excerpt from Our By Laws,
ARTICLE III – MEMBERSHIP
Section 3. Rights and Privileges of Membership
Section 4. Membership Dues
Paragraph 1: The members of the organization will be subject to the annual dues of $15 for the Junior Individual & $25 for Full Individual membership. Sponsor/Commercial Membership requires the donation of goods and/or services to the organization in an amount and for a period of time agreed to by the Board of Directors. Membership dues are renewable at the start of the fiscal year.

At the moment we do not have a life time membership. However, we do have the following types of memberships that will be effective January 1st, 2010.
$25 Individual Membership
·
$40 Married Couple Membership
$50 Family Membership up to 3 members. Married Couple plus Dependant (age 13 to 18)
$5 per additional member added to Family Membership. Must be residing at the same principal residence.
Proof of residency is required.
All membership cards will be issued once the application and payment is received in full.
·Each adult member receives 1 card & 1 vote with full name printed on card.
·Each Dependant receives 1 membership card with full name printed on card.
·No refunds will be given on previous paid accounts as stated in the By Laws.
The $250-$300 price range that you heard is for our current and potential sponsors in which they pay in Gift Certs, Equipment and or Paypal to this organization. Hope this helps. :)

You beat me to it! I was all set with my copy and paste from the home page (About Us):
Dues are $25 for a year long membership which starts from the date of payment. These dues quickly pay for themselves by the discounts given that many local stores honor to MAAST members.
We are trying to make our club better, having more educational meetings, more door prizes, raffle items and guest speakers. We also have the routine maintenance items like website, food for meetings,, membership dues to national marine organizations, and print/publication fee's. Membership dues allow our club to keep afloat and make all of this possible. As always, the website portion of the club remains free but charters due get some perks.
Why collect dues?
Keep MAAST afloat.
Funds club meetings so the host doesn't have to pay for it all out of pocket.
Allows for website improvements / maintanence.
Allows us to bring in "expert" spearkers at meetings
Higher quality raffles, higher quality meetings, higher quality club!
Eligibility to run for a club office or be appointed to a committee.
Eligibility to VOTE!
Discounts at participating LFS's and online vendors
A membership card
A voice to represent Aquarists' interests.
For more information concerning Charter status, please read our By-laws.
The membership dues are $25.00. Payment can be made either at meetings, online via paypal, or with a check mailed to our P.O. box below:
If you use paypal please include your screen name, real name, email, home address and phone and send paypal to : treasurer@maast.org (http://www.maast.org/payments.php)
or vie snail mail to:

I won PotM one month last year. I got a gift certificate and should be getting a tshirt. Not bad considering I didn't think there was any prize involved. I was just doing it for the sweet taste of victory. I think I might have had the only entry though. :) Still, first place baby!

Heres a heads up for the next swap if you are not aware of it. September- 7th Frag Swap Schertz Community Center. I'm pretty sure if you request time off now months in advance you can attend.

I run my own business and I am aware of frag swaps months in advance. But if Im changing my schedule for anything, its not a frag swap.

Things still happen at meetings. Some of the contests, frag exchange, TOTQ and POTM have slowed. They've slowed from lack of involvement - you get out what you put in and some folks don't put in anything. Well, unless you count selling. I know the folks that have volunteered to head those things up have busted their *** to make it happen with little to no involvement from anyone else.
I know there has been talk about moving meetings around for other days. If they move to a Saturday then folks that work on those days don't get to go. Best option is splitting them up. Also, Sunday rental on most places like the Schertz Community Center are way cheaper on Sundays. It helps the money go further.
There are lots of things that you can do to help MAAST out. Items such as a weekly discussion on a topic, help for others that need it, ideas for new techniques on husbandry for the tanks we keep, assisting with a committee, are just a few.

Even better for you since I am sure you can give yourself a day off or a couple hours of lunch break once a month to attend something or help organize/run an event(coral growth contest, POTM, TOTM, ETC.). Especially since your a successful business owner.

I would suggest maybe alternating the days. Make some events on Saturdays and some on Sundays so everyone has an opportunity at some point.
I for one will never be able to come on Saturdays. Sundays work perfect for me and my family, when I'm available. I'm sure we could never pick one day that will always work for everyone which is why mixing it up might be a good idea. But i haven't been to any events in awhile so maybe Saturdays are also being used for events.
I'm hoping to be at the frag swap on Sunday the 6th. Still trying to confirm.

Hi I just paid to become a charter member on paypal but didn't get to type my member name, address, and email for the payment. Who do I need to contact to give them my information because it is just going to look like a random payment from a random email address. I tried emailing treasurer@maast.org

I was a charter member in the past before I went MIA a couple of years to finish my bachelors degree in Biology at The University of the Incarnate Word. I will be chartered up by/on the day of the swap don't worry. Especially since our poker group within the fraternity kicked off again.
