got this at aquarium designs in the "bargain basement" aisle since it was a little banged up... any tips on trying to get this guy healthy again, other than water qual?

Try to find a shaded place for it out of the main light and feed it once a day.

a lot of people will start them out in their quarantine tanks, in a bowl, and feed them inside the bowl so they get as much food as possible. If you could put them in the QT, and it's an option, only leave them under the actinic light. They're nonphotosynthetic and will be fine without light. After you get them healed up and they start extending to eat every night, move them into the display.

Best of luck. Most LPS I've seen in that shape continue to melt, or "brown jelly". As was said they are not photosynthetic and need daily doses of rotifers or cyclops.

i was told i should spot feed these guys brine shrimp with my turkey baster. Will that work ok? I did move the piece down to some shade.

in that shape, I'd give them something smaller than brine (rotifers or cyclpos like Mike said). The bowl method I talked about previously works best but if you need to, the turkey baster will be okay
