I need to replace my fathers computer (his is probably around 8 years old) with something a little newer. Looking for something very cheap that would run and possibly already have a copy of XP. He refuses to buy a newer one and spend the money himself and I'm to the point where it's really not capable to be fixed any longer the way it sits.

Let me know if you have anything and how much for it.

just picked up a used dell for pretty cheap from this (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&q=used+computers&near=San+Antonio,+TX&fb=1&view=text&cd=11&latlng=29515849,-98528326,1634830212405427455&ei=Z8IwR-b9N4_CjgHPvKTUCg) place

Ciff, I just checked with the one I have in the attic (why?) - and you are welcome to it, but it's probably almost as old - it's running Windows ME!!!

Yeah, my dads is still running Windows 98 because that machine won't run Win98. It's kind of like giving the caveman a new laser.
I need to do something so he can check his email with though and just didn't want to spend a ton of money but figured I'd just buy him something better than what he has now rather than try to rebuild that old thing.

Cliff, found a decent price on www.slickdeals.net (http://www.slickdeals.net) on a brand new Dell w/19" LDC monitor, for $449, free shipping. Dual core Intel, 1 gb memory, 160GB HD, 1 year on site warranty, DVD.

Check Best Buy.....some of those desktops are extremely cheap, and pre-loaded with Vista.

I found a Dell Optiplex GX270 with P4 2.4ghz, 40 gig hd, 512K ram, DVDrom/cd-rw. Loaded XP on it for $85.
Thanks for all the help folks, it did take me a while to get the drivers installed but finally found the correct ones, even using the Dell Tag# it took a while to get the right ones.

Thanks again.

Yep, the place I guess has a contract to purchase old computers from different govt. and businesses and then resells them. They didn't have XP on it but it had the tag so I only needed to load the version I already had at home.
It's a place that's in a very old building downtown off of Medina Rd. very near to the Bexar County jail.
Really good prices on everything that they have.

Very much like them just not as nice a store, more of a warehouse and quite a bit cheaper although they are opening up a small storefront there. I stopped by that place yesterday on my way home from work and it was a pretty nice shop. They had the same machine I had bought but were asking I think $289, I know it was close to $300 for it. Lots of other good stuff thought at good prices.
The address is 411 N. Medina Rd if anybody wants to check it out.

That's a good computer Cliff. If you want any more I have a few Dell GX110 models that are PIII 933 MHz and have 256 MB RAM in them and around 8-20 gig hard drives. They are free for you if you want one. I might have extra memory for them also...
