Im going to place a order today for a return pump. With that said ive always been a fan of Mags. Ive used them on all my aquariums with a operating sump or wetdry. I need a pump of approx 1200gph. Obviuosly first thing that comes to my mind is the Mag 12, but am also looking at the Quiet One 5000 pump. Are there any advantages of going with a quiet one over Mag. Ive never owned a Rainbow Quiet one so those who have used both what do you think.

I love my mag too, but alot of people despise them! Have you thought about an external pump for your return like a PanWorld Bluline? Of course there is always an iwaki, but PanWorld is essentially a conglomerate of the iwaki engineers.

That said, know you are going for a softie tank, so the heat from the mag probably isn't a big deal. :) There are also the sequence branded pumps too!

i had a quiet one 3000 on a frag setup that gave me nothing but trouble - and i bought it new. i have never had an issue with the mag drive pumps i use, and some are about 4 years old.

If your still researching, check out the Eheim line of pumps. Hands down one of the best submersible water pumps on the market. IMO they will outperform and out last a MAG pump in the long run.

So the Mags are the best in sump out there?

haha, well as you can see just above your post Eheim just got a nod of approval. As I posted ive always used mags and have never had any problems, but wanted another opinion which I got. Cant say they are the best but many maastard use them and are very happy, but others dont.

I've HEARD Ehiems are the best choice. That being said, like Ace, I've got a few Mags that are trouble free. HOWEVER, my Quiet One 6000 has ALSO BEEN TROUBLE FREE. Most folks have a problem getting them to turn back on after shutoff. Mine gets shut off at least twice a day, and I've NEVER had a problem with it. Maybe that's the solution - cut them off often?

i would say go with the ehiem or an external b/c of the pwr draw that they have. in contrast to a mag the ehiem or external will pay for itself in savings of energy costs.

I don't especially like mag pumps; they're absurdly over rated for flow in any sort of pressure situations, they generate a lot of heat, and they're notorious leakers. But maybe I'm just a grouch. For return pumps, external is the only way to go IMO; pan world or iwaki. I had one of the older external quiet one pumps; it worked okay for a while, although it ran REALLY hot, and then one day it turned from a "quiet" one into a "screaming" one and I bought a pan world.

I've used both and currently have an eheim. I must say that it's quiter and produces less heat than the mag. My old eheim has been through heck and back and is currently being used in our pond and it's over 6yrs old.

I had one of the CA pumps on a skimmer I owned once. Their kinda cheap and don't seem like they would have good enough head pressure for a return pump.
