What are some books ya’ll couldn’t live without? The newest book I’ve got (basically “mini reef for dummies”) was written in 2002. It got me through the importance of water changes, guided me through the cycle, gave me a short list of some good reef inhabitants etc. … but that’s all it was good for.

The more in-depth book I bought was written in 1975 and revised in 1985. It delves much deeper into reef keeping; however, it is not current. I’d love to know what books have been an important part of your reef journey.

I have read through the Reef Aquarium vol 1 &2 (something like that) by Delbeek and Sprung. Learned lots from them.

I like Natural Reef Aquariums by John H. Tullock. I learned some valuable information from that particular book. Go to ebay and you can get some really good deals on current books (including the one I mentioned).

Save your money and send it to MAAST.org. We have better pictures and the forums pretty much cover everything and if they don't ask the question and it will normally get several answers, something a book won't. Okay, okay, if you have money left over after you send your $25, the Julian Sprung books are usually pretty good.

Come out to CB Pets and get some books cheaper than you'll ever find them anywhere! I have a number of them in the back so ask me or Mark about them if you come out.

IMO, I have never seen any forum that covers all the basics in as much detail as a good book. Best to read a few good books and then it's easier to ask the right questions and really know if the answers/information your getting on a forum are correct for your situation. What's right for one tank isn't always right for another and it's pretty hard to know if you should take advise or not if you don't have a good knowledge base yourself.

A Pocket Expert Guide: MARINE FISHES by Scott W. Michael
A Pocket Expert Guide: MARINE INVERTEBRATES by Ronald L. Shimek, PhD

I wish someone had told me a year ago to buy these two books (Amazon cheaper) and carry them with me to every fish store, consult before any purchase of anything. Most LFS have them behind the counter to consult, but you will want your own of each to look over and plan what you want to have in your tank. These two resources are indespensible and will save you some heartache of going wrong with an impulse buy.
