Well, my electricity bill was over $500 last month (third time I think this has happened this year). I don't even run a chiller.
I finally decided enough was enough and looked into the rates I was paying and decided to look around at other electricity providers. I found a website (http://www.whitefence.com/electricity-service.html) that you can use to see different providers in your area and various plans/rates they charge. I found a 6-month contract plan from First Choice Power that is around 25% lower per kWH than I was paying (Reliant month-to-month).
So any of you out there that haven't shopped around for your electricty in awhile I suggest you take a look and see what you are paying vs. what is available out there.

I tried this - but all I got was an order form. No quote. I have a feeling that San Antonio rates are hard to beat... CPS has some of the lowest prices in the country.

Same here. And yeah, CPS is one of the best ones in the state.

Well, its not my website - don't blame me! :) At any rate, most providers have a website you can go to directly and look at their rates/plans...

When you say $500 a month that doesn't tell me you are paying too much for electricity. Take your bill and find the KWH's used then divide by your bill to find out if you are paying 13(High) cents a kilowatt hour or 9 cents(Low) or whatever. With CPS in the summer months with their surcharges we are paying around 10 to 11 cents a KWH. In Kinney county my parents pay 13 cents a kilowatt hour due to a large amount of land Rio Grande Coop has to cover and very few users. Remember someone can offer cheap 6 cents an hour for electricity but then come back and add surcharges from heck(ATT) and double your bill.

You don't think I already did the calculations? I was averaging 14.3 cents a kWH (it would actually have been higher if I had used less...variable rates/usage, etc.). I'd bet most people that are using somebody like Reliant or TXU are paying similar rates unless they are on a contract.

Oh, and did I mention that if anybody saves $100 on their electricity bill each month they owe me a free frag? :)

Boy I am sure glad they deregulated the power companies so the prices would go down! 14 cent a KWH whow! In all fareness to the power companies the state is running off of way too many natural gas generators and we all know the price of gas these days. I guess we need to start looking at ways to cut energy even in our aquariums.

another thing to look at is the age of your home... do you have double pane windows? what type of insulation in your walls. insulation in your cieling? look into radient barrier. and when was the last time your ac was serviced or coils cleaned?
