i've been price shopping for a new tank when i get home and really want as close to 200 gallons as possible. went to the glass gages website and saw their 180's. what would you rather have, a 180 tall or a 180 wide??? i am leaning towards the 180 wide but not sure. what does everyone else think, what would you do?????

Personally, I love wide tanks. Really makes for some great aquascaping possibilities. Also, I have found with taller tanks that it is much harder to get in there to work and clean

Wide. Once you start getting over 20" you start needing long arms and heavy lighting. My new tank is almost 36" deep and I can't clean the glass myself. I have to have special equipment.

My preference is wide tanks over tall as it gives you more area to aquascape and more area for the fish to swim.

Another vote for wide, more air to water exchange and it is a pain to clean when you get over 24" tall.

I vote wide also as long as you can reach to the back some way.
I went out and looked at the dimensions of the 180 wide and at 72x24x25 you should be able to get by with 250 watt bulbs still. Of course keep you most light demanding corals higher.
I have the 135 that is 72x18x24 and really like the footprint and the extra six inches from front to back would be nice, but a real pain for me to reach back that far since I'm only 5'7" tall myself and don't have access from the back.

another vote for wide just for the amount of money you could save for lights alone :)

As someone currenlty looking for a 120g tall (hint hint anyone?), I would say it also depends on the space you have for displaying it!

180 gallons is 180 gallons, how does a wide = more room? :-p Just playing a smart-alec, dont mind me....

I've seen some great looking fish-only tanks that are tall, but the best reef tanks are made w i d e !!!

Another vote for wide. That's what I have and am really happy with it.
Just a suggestion, if you plan on going with Glass Cages do some research on their quality, and more importantly, their customer service. I've heard everything from horror stories to "eh, they ain't so bad" stories about them. Can't say I've ever heard anyone rave about them though.
