Are Red Coris Wrasses reef safe.

Everywhere I've read says yes but with caution? Any one actually have one and if so how do the act with sps and other wrasses?

At Fin-Addict I use to put yellow corris wrasses in reefs all the time and they did great.

I saw one of these at my LFS and thought to myself "WOW". But I did some research in the book "A Pocket Expert Guide : Marine Fishes" that made me change my mind and I did not get it. Here is some of what was written in the publication.

Coris Gaimard
Yellowtail Coris aka (Red Coris)

Max Length: 13.7 Inches
Hardiness: 4 out of 5

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Not Recommended. An opportunistic predator that will eat snails, mollusks, hermit crabs, crabs, shrimps, and sea urchins. Larger individual may rearrange aquascaping. They are typically not aggressive toward other fishes, although larger individuals may harrass smaller tank mates.

I hope that helps.

Yeah I was affraid of the hermit problem. I found one for 11.99 which is a steal but not if it eats $80 worth of crabs.

Thanks for the advise.

The yellow "coris" wrasses are perfectly reef safe (were my favorites) but the orange ones are not. They yellow ones are not actually of the genus Coris.

So what are some wrasses other than the fairy's that have coloration but are not that mean spirited.

You mostly have to look for the smaller ones.
here a web site http://www.marinecenter.com/fish/wrassereefsafe/

i didnt have to 'fix' all the rock work he was kindly rearranging but I loved our coris. I will admit that Brian had his hands in the tank constantly flipping stuff back over though...lol.

Wrasses that are reef safe? hmmm...forgive my spelling on some of these.
Haliochores sp. are good (ie Christmas/ornate, wardleys, etc)
Leopard wrasses (difficult to get eating frozen however, care req's similar to mandarins)
Fariy wrasses (very peaceful, will be harassed by boisterous fish though. Look at the pink/red margin fairy wrasse, it is spectacular in person. Also the Scotts, Lineatus, rhomboid etc)
Flashers

Our Mystery ate our cleaner shrimp but other than that has been a model citizen in the reef.
Keep in mind that a 6-line and most pseudo's/and grammas will pick on and kill the timid wrasses like the fairy's.

Kyle you remember the pictures of my clam killing a wrasse? That was a coris wrasse. That's the same wrasses that killed 3 other clams (unknown to me why they kept disappearing so quickly) and would pick up snails by their foot. It would go into the corners of the tank and smack the snail from pane to pane until the snail would be pulled from the shell.

Thank for all the help everyone.

Mike, I forgot about the clam eater...at least he got what was coming to him.
