I talked with Dr Hovanac for about 2 hours at the Dr's Foster and Smith Conference. He is an expert in denitrification. His theories are based on "sound" science.

I am still writing a few papers and when done, a summary of his lecture and our conversation will be posted in the Library section.

And do not get rid of your live rock just yet. He did not say live rock is not a filter. He just has a thorough understanding of how it works. The thread on RC is typical in our hobby.

From what I understood, essentially surface area is everything, and that less of the breakdown is occuring inside the rock as previously believed?

Why doesn't he mention WC as a source of nitrate reduction? Although inefficient, it gets the job done. Maybe I should just wait for Ping's paper to be finished.
