When I dipped mine I made the water temp out of the sink the same as it was in the tank, that way it doesn't go in to much shock. I dipped him for about 2 to 5 minutes. He's doing fine now. You might want to wait as see what anyone else says, before you dip him.

Also dechlorinate your tap! Should be fine!! What stress or condition making it break out?

if you do a fresh water dip then quarentine the fish, if you put it back into the displayyou did absolutely nothing except stress the fish out some more. powder blues get ick very easy and the best thing to do is feed them lots. i prefer to feed sick tangs live macro.

TXSTATE,
Unfortunately, being the fish it is.. that FW dip might harm more than it will do any good. My best suggestion is dip him, and put him in the sump. This way he can be by himself, hide as much as he wants and no other fish will be pestering him. Fish always pick on the sick one, LOL..

no one is picking on him he is twice the size... and i havent brought my self to tear down my reef to catch him either ive been throwing in frozen like crazy along with pellets w/ garlic hoping that what people say about it boosting immune systems is true

just be careful not to overdo it on the feeding. if your water quality decreases, it will likely make him worse. the best way for his immune system to fight if you arent going to remove him and treat is to
1. make sure he is eating - live macro algae can help there like jeff suggested,
2. keep your water quality as near perfect as possible,
3. make sure the other fish arent stressing him - whether they are actually nipping or not, aggressive behavior will cause stress
any big temperature changes in your tank lately?

The good thing about macro or nori is that it is specific food for your tang - many or most of the other fish won't chow down on it. Live macro means nothing goes to waste. I have plenty if you need some - although I think I'll be taking a pile of it over to FA today.

FW dip will kill some marine parasites, but will not kill Crypto ("ick"), if indeed that's what it has. If it is Cryptocaryon sp., and you want to be rid of it, you will need to isolate the fish (and any others in your display) in quarantine and treat with copper sulfate (.15 mg/l) and/or hyposalinity (between 1.008 to 1.010). Do not place any fish back in the main display for 5-6 weeks to allow the benthic and free swimming stages of the parasite to die, and quarantine all future additions before placing in the display.

I had an ick outbreak that hit mostly my regal tang. I tried garlic and it might have helped him eat for a couple months. But when I got two cleaner shrimps the problem went away right away.
