I was given a clam for "Father's Day". We put on a rock at the highest point in the tank sink I am using PC lighting. I recently aquired a MH 150w pendant with a 14k bulb. Now the clam is closing up. I think it is getting to much light. The problem is the foot has attached to the rock.

Any suggestions on how to move the clam?

Thanks in advance for your help. . .

maybe shade that area fo the reef with a cloth for a few days and slowly allow more light,, just not used to it,, definetly not too much light

ive always heard to take a water bottle and put some saltwater from your tank in it and leave it in your freezer for a bit then put in tank poke a hole in the lid and squirt the threads and foot and its supposed to let go

Just take a razor or xacto knife and cut the threads that are attached. Do not cut the foot, the foot should retract into the shell but sometimes they keep a grip on the rock even when you're messing with them. The foot can be gently massaged free, cut the threads not the foot.

Exactly. Its all in the threads. Cut them off. the foot will probably contract.

You guys are nuts....don't cut on it! You take a bottle of cold water and poke a hole in the lid. then take the bottle and squirt the cold water at the bottom of the clam and it will let go. Just that simple...

No offense intended Diego but with any clam I got...I'm not depending on "probably contract"....you do the cold water and it will.

If you damage the foot, the clam will be history.

You can also rock it back and forth gently until it let's go. That's what I have done in the past.

Thanks for all the info fellow reefers.

WE've tried rocking back an forth, I think we are to scared to keep rocking it. :blush

I think I will attempt the cold water first, I'm a little shakey with a knife (too much caffeine).

my crocea willingly let go once.. he just dropped right off his perch and lest this nasty white piece of flesh behind that took a week for the crabs to knock out.

How are the wild clams collected?

I successfully removed my clam from its perch. I used the cold water and cutting method.

Ran out of cold water so had to cut some threads. Moved it to a smaller rock in the bottom of the tank and it opened up. Life is good! :lol

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.
