i work for advance auto parts
well we have these $20 blue LED fixtures meant for lighting up the inside of cars (rather cheesy imo) which is pretty much a plastic strip with blue LEDs. i figure all youd have to do is slap a 12 volt power supply on those bad boys and BAM cheap moonlights.

Links work after you enter your zip.
Yeah, those would work if you were comfortable with rewiring them (it's really not hard).
Cars are mostly 12v so these should run ok on a 12v or similar (less but not more without resistors) power supply.
$20 to me doesnt sound like cheap moonlights though ;).
You could just buy some LEDs for really cheap (superbrightleds.com isnt bad. digikey.com and future components are better but you have to know what you are looking for) and wire it up yourself if you feel like messing with it.

I've seen that project been done before.. And the outcome is..
(Drum Rolls!)
A tank that is been invaded by aliens. The lights shoot straight down like "beam me up Scotty".. Thats too many LEDs in a single area. You need to spread them out.. and good water surface flow.

I did this little DIY with my tank. Though not everyone will agree with the amount of light that is put into the tank but mine was two little strips of 10 LEDs. I cut the cig. lighter plug off and reattached the lights to a old wall adapter that I had from some type of electronic. ClownReef is right on if you have them pointing directly into the tank but I have mine on both ends of the tank at an angle so that the light is dispersed all over and not at one or should I say in my case two general areas. Also since the lights are aimed across the surface of the water I get a nice effect with the water flow at the top of the tank.
Sorry about the images they are way to dark but I don't have a good camera right now.
close up of one side(yes I know there are some leds out)-the other side was worse

That's what I used on my setup.
The strip in the middle is from AutoZone.
Just cut the plug off and used an old 12V power supply (from cell phone, etc.)
The two outside are retail moonlight.
The combo gives a nice effect (can't see much with cheap camera)

Not necessarily...its up to your personal preference. Spreading them out works, but you can get different effects by having them grouped together. Their all going to act as a nightlight, so it just depends on how you want it to look.
