Don't use Chemi-clean!
A few months ago I had recieved some macro algea from a friend that broke down his tank. A couple weeks later I noticed some red algea growing on the sand bed, this algea started to spread all over the tank. So I then checked my nitrate levels to find that they had went from 10-20 ppm to about 40-60ppm! Didn't think macro algea would have done this but it was the only thing I had changed in many months. So anyway, I got some chemi-clean that by the way is supposed to be safe for all reef tanks and invertabras. 24 hours later all my sps coral were dead and serpant star, brittle star, and all my clams! Lps and softies were in major shock, but after a couple of large water changes they recovered. Don't use chemi-clean!

did you use aeration? dissolved oxygen levels drop when the water fills with dead stuff
most people that seem to have problems with chemi-clean don't follow the directions or use their tank volume instead of the actual water content (tank volume minus all that live rock...)

Thats sucks.. Sorry to hear that. I was going to use that stuff. But I thought I would just do water changes every other day.intill it was gone..Cause that would be safer. Hearing your story makes me glad. I didnt..

I've never had problems using it. It's a strong oxidizer so maybe that combined with whatever was driving up your nitrates was just to much. I can't imagine how the macro's made your nitrates go up, must have been something else going on IMO.

I used Chemi-clean in my system twice with no problems. I have 90% SPS with clams.
I even double the dose each time. I agree with Richard, something else was going on in your tank. Especially with nitrates jumping up so fast. Maybe things were about to go downhill anyway and you used Chemi-claen just as that was happening.

I have just let it go a couple times in my sump. I didn't do anything special to it and it went away on it's own. It has never gotten into my main system.
