Ok I moved the 47 gallon over to the new apt. I put my 250, lol it gets good here, over my old tank cover, and a little bit later I heard it pop. Thank god it is not tempered! I pulled out the excess fairly easy. I now need to eiter hang or mount my light above the water. Its a pfo mini pendant, with eyehooks. Any ideas before I lose my shtuff?

I run 2 - 250W MH and 1 - 175W MH three inches above my glass tops on my 155. I am able to do this by having a 4" fan sitting on top of the glass tops blowing across keeping the tops cool. What is nice about this application is that I do not get the blinding effect of keeping MH's six to eight inches above your aquarium.

If the glass had been tempered it would not have broken. Tempered glass accepts heat. The glass over double ended bulbs is tempered. So you could order new pieces that are tempered.

Oh. lol ty Mike. I am looking for a quick fix that won't be for long term I had thought about doing a few metal bars made to look like a Tic Tac Toe board that would support the light so it would be close to the water. I am getting my 75g this weekend! :) Then I'll just mount it in the canopy!!!

ok, i am slightly confused...

did the uv shield break on the pendant, or did the glass top on the tank break?

if the top brok, and your just looking for a way to support it...

well man that is easy! go to home depot and by some plant hooks that go into your cieling, and hang that sucker w/ some piano wire or chains.

oh.. wait.. you said temporary.

umm... when I had my 250 over the 30 temporarily, I used 2x4's ... ugly as sin, and the light actually carbonized parts of the wood over time, but it never caught fire... still.. i wouldn't reccomend it.

temporary... and obviously inexpensive...

pvc frame? maybe not so cheap...

I just need something to last till this weekend. There is no way I am hanging anything from our beautiful new ceiling!!!! LOL, it's just too pretty. I'd like to get some cheap little metal bars to run across the top, and since it's only 20 inches, it shouldn't be too hard. I just want a specific name for whatever I need so I can just go in and ask for it, because the last thing my wallet needs is me walking around Lowe's digging for things, then walking out with half of the store. To answer your question, it was the top. I don't want any dead zoos and or palys!!!! I may move all of the large crabs out of the nano, and put them there, but I would like a better solution. After moving the tank for the better part of last night, I would like to not get really wet tonight!

hmm, well if it's just for a weekend, I wouldn't worry about it... storms cover a reef from effective light, and infact there is a huge thread on reef central right now advocating a 3 day dark cycle every so often.

as for cheap metal bars...

how long do they need to be?

20 inches. Yeah I read all about the three day thing. It shouldn't be an issue, but then there are the ones that have gotten knocked around, flipped upside down into the sand etc. I guess it's not too big a deal, but I'd rather it be on!

hmmm...

the first thing that comes to mind, is at lowes, and home depot, there are threaded metal dowls that are easily long enough...

if memory serves, they are not all that expensive, you could just buy two and lay them accross the tank. I don't know what they are reallyc alled, but they are sold on the isle w/ all the screws and bolts, and they are about 3ft long.

threaded metal dowls

If its round stock, make sure they will not roll off the top of the aquarium. I can just picture them rolling off the edge and the light falling into the aquarium :o

and that sir is my fear. I did think about those! I thought about the towl rack bars from the bathroom? It is square, just not sure if those could handle the heat.

Try some aluminum angle from Home Depot. Not real cheap, but will work.

how about aluminium straight edges in the tools section... then you can use them for something else later.

Eric i have those metal bars on my 125 remember?...
they kinda look like the trim to a frame of some sort... or like those long bars you drill to the wall and use to make shelfs or something like that.. ANY WAY...you can borrow mine if you need someting asap...
Although i'm not sure if they are to long?? and im at work so i cant measure them, but its a 125g and they rest on the top lip of the tank from front to back... isnt that about 20 in??

Not sure..
