Anyone know if he is still open? Went by and he was closed. He has not answered his phones and no longer has the message like he used to. I am afraid that we are losing to many LFS, to fast.

He doesn't exactly go by the hours on the door, sometimes he just closes to go get something to eat.

With the exception of the larger stores I've learned to always call before I go. Seems like that's a trend with many of the smaller stores.

I heard a rumor that fishy business was on the market, as in possibly for sale. That was overheard about 10 days back while I was shopping in SA. There was even a price attached to the story as to how much it would take to buy the keys, it wasn't very expensive to buy your own store. Of course it was overheard and the numbers may have been made up, things like that happen if your store does not follow a strict regimen associated with being there and open when the signs say so.

It's a bad location for business, otherwise it's great.

Wow. At this rate, there won't be ANY stores left in town... Oh, and that $8K in yellow pages ads still owed, doesn't exactly make it easy to move!

If we are going to lock this one.... I don't see what Erik's comment had to do with the inability of the shop to pay it's bills.

????????????? OK, Jason. Are any one of the comments untrue? who's bashing and running? If this thread gets locked just because of people stating the result of what they saw listed on a public domain, or what they experienced when they went to your store (ie doors locked and empty during normal hours) then someone is more out of their mind then I am.

Just wanted to add this as it was said long before the debate about the excess bills.

I see Erik actually sticking his neck out to say that besides being in a bad location the store "is great".
So Erik goes out and says the store is great, just not some place most would go to because it is hidden away, then responds to information given about a bad business decision. His comment in no way represented the shop itself but was a personal comment in regards to a bad business practice. Again I'm still stumped as to how that comment affects the business now that it is closed and how could that have caused FB to fail? It wasn't the inability to pay it's bills in the first place that ultimately caused the business to fail? Let's be reasonable adults here, the inability for a shop in a bad location, that was never open when posted, to generate enough money to pay it's bills is in no way a reflection of the customer base. Sounds to me like the added stresses from this shop wore down on the keeper so that anything said was a direct attack to the owner and now his frustrations are poring over. As soon as a shop owner takes on a negative tone, be it from customers telling him his shop needs improvement or a failure to produce enough money to not add an additional stressor, the shop is basically doomed. Nobody in this thread attacked anyone, it was just a long thread were people worked together and found public documents about a business for sale and all comments were pretty much about the sale of the shop, not attacking it. I'm lost.

I really liked his store less the facts of location and lack of coral. The salt prices were awesome, and I liked his tank setups. Yes I would have puked, had it been me that had too foot that bill. I wasn't intending to be rude in anyway. I know that when you buy a company you buy all of it's debt as well. I was trying to argue the fact that because of the location, and due to the inherent bills that come with buying it, I personally wouldn't buy it. That whole area has been a ghostown as of late. There used to be a fish store in front of what used to be HEB where The Bitter End (not the bar) is now. It's gone, HEB is gone, Larzland is gone, the only thing that has managed to stay open is blockbuster, and I am sure that's not that busy of a store. Anyone that went to Mac knows this area better than I do, and I am sure I am well defended in that right. Personally, I wouldn't want to buy debt if I had to anyway, and 8k to the yellow pages is just a little panicky to me. I never knew how much those ads costed in the first place. I would have just made sure that when someone googled "saltwater fish stores in San Antonio, TX" that my site would be at the top of the list. Being that I could build a site myself, I probably would, and it would never cost me that much, which again is why, it is my opinion. No hard feelings, I wish you the best of luck. I really wasn't trying to take away from the want to own your own business.

Just to let you know Erik. The Blockbuster is and has been closed for a while. The only thing that has made it is the Dollar store there.

I have never been to any of the fish stores in SA. I live too far away. So I feel I can be pretty impartial when I say this.
I didn't see where anyone was bashing you. I have found everyone on this site to be helpful and decent. Sure, some people have different opinions.. but a blanket statement like the one you just made is uncalled for. This site is not "built on selfishness and slander" as you so quaintly put it. It was built with the idea of helping other reefkeepers. In my opinion you owe every member here an apology for those comments.

I remember that one, in fact,LOL, that is why I have never gone to the shop either. I hit SA from ATX 1-2 each month and as most people know, when I'm in town, I'm there to spend money. Yep I remember once saying something to the effect of "Hey watching a business owner lash out the way you are on an open forum doesn't look good", and the response of telling me where to put me head and that light doesn't penetrate there very well. That was enough for me and what seems to me to be the rest of San Antonio to stay away. If CB pets can draw them in from all over, so could this shop. Had the owner wished to be friendly and active people would have made it a point to drive to the shop. I figure if I drive once a month or more to SA I'll hit whatever shop I can. I've already been on the road for an hour and a half, what's another 15 minutes? Why would I care if I drove to a ghost town? I've never seen the type of support for the community as I have from Ed at Wolf Reef or Richard and Mark at CB Pets. I keep waiting for the Upper Guadalupe to drop a few CFM so I can make a kayak/coral buying trip, and I will just as soon as I can get my boats wet. The type of support and customer base I see for that shop is a draw for me as a consumer, it makes me think "geez I need to get to CB and look around".

I try to stay out of these type of threads because of my position but I seem to remember a thread where Jason , you said that you didn't nee our (Maast) business because you had enough of other's to support you...
undoubtedly, You were wrong...
If you would have used a little civility, business-sense and people skills about the way you talked to people here on this sight and probably in your store, busines could have possibly been better.
You don't know me from anybody, but there are stores that I will drive 4 hours to, just because of their service and the way I'm treated when I get there.
BOTTOM LINE is...You talk to and treat customers like crap....you get a crap worth of customers...
Sorry this didn't work out for you but you can't blame it on MAAST.

so far all I seen is that the salt was cheap.. And thats all ppl has said about the store. I went in there once to look at live rock. Asked about one rock. He pulls it out and said "its about a $200 rock. Just cause of all the Coralline algae on it" And the rock was about 5 to 8lbs. I just said ok. But that made me never want to go back.
