i was reading a thread on reefcentral about putting a maxijet 900 on instead of the stock return pump. i have a mj 1200 that im not using. would this be overkill?
would i need to leave the overflow open all the time?

I would I have a 900 in mine and I added another 170 gph pump in the display. I will be getting a miniject 606 and putting it in Chamber three with loc-line to direct flow better. I also covered up the lower return so that the skimmer up high actuly works and keeps the scum buildup off the surface. I will be moding the 2nd chamber to make a fuge out of it. I plan on peeling away the the black tape and put on external 13w PC light back there so I can add cheato or some other macro. that is all for know. lol Next I plan to mod the ballast and make them external and change to 32w and not the 27w PC lamps. hth

i have an aquapod 24. the only thing im worried about is that the mj 1200 as a return pump would suck faster than the overflow can take water in.

i think thats what im going to do and use the stock pump and another powerhead for circulation. i want a really high turnover rate in the sump and moderate flow in the display area.
im going to try my hand at SPS this time around. ive never done it and i picked up an established tank with metal halide lights for this. lets hope i dont kill anything :D

I would go the other way around slower flow through the fuge and more in the display. SPS like a lot of random flow.

Put maxijets in both chambers..its not overkill at all. In my 12 i ran a 900 and a 1200.

No modding necessary. You need to use the venturi attachment to attach the tubing.

Why the tubing should just slip right over the exit tube on the MJ and right into the hole for the return. Unless the 12g and the 24g are that much different.

No its a different size. I had to use the venturi attachment on my mj1200. It would fit if you heated the tubing and expanded it and then connected it.

ok I did know that. I know it slips right over the 900. Good to know as well thanks

my tubing fit my 1200 no problem. i did have to cut about an inch off because the venturi is bigger in the stock pump.
