Ok so we sold our house and moved this weekend and the tank move was successful... or so i thought. i saved all the water i could and got a new sump so fixed the leak there, and upgraded everything that i wanted( that was the fun part )every thing fared well for moving a 140 gallon tank. get all the saved water back into the tank seems great let it run on one filter over night till i can get to RCA to get the rest of the water needed. so tomorrrow comes and right after work i make 6 different trips to the store to get the water to finish filling the tank and WELL... LIKE I SAID everything seemed well last night i notice a small leak coming fron the under the black tank edging ( crap) i check it is not leaking underneith the tank into the stand just from the edging up? ( kinda weird ) so i figure something had to have pulled the silicone away from the bottom or side of the inside tank.... right... so what do i do it is a small leak maybe 1/2 cup of water every 12 hours not much so do i deal with it for a while or just suck it up and tear my tank apart again for the 2nd time this week. Should i pay to get it fixed or should some silicond do the trick i am sure with the tank apart and dry i can find where it is coming from... i think..... hurry someone HELP.....

sounds like you're going to need to take it down again. It will only get worse, better to deal with it now.

Where exactly is the leak at? Is it at the top edge of the tank or down at the bottom trim?

I feel stupid for not asking the same, but I am assuming it's the bottom?

yes it it at the bottom of the tank but it is leaking throught the outside of the black trim down the front of the stand,- not down into the inside of the stand as you would think? do you think if i get some silicone and just put a thick layer and let it dry it will br ok?

NO, unfortunatly that will not work. the entire seam will need to be resealed for any long term success . Better to take it down now and save a lot of money in clean up costs and lost critters

Any chance the tank is drilled and the water is leaking by the gasket and somehow showing up elsewhere? Doubt it but taking the tank out of service would suck if that was it.

Mike, that's a good point... Also, water WILL run around under those plastic trim items. It will also travel on surfaces/pipes/tubing too!

Where are you located?

The only place I can think of in San Antonio is Forever Pets off of Basse close to San Pedro.

If your tank is really leaking, and it's not under a warranty, I would probably advise you to bite the bullet and get a new tank. The reason is that you probably have more invested in livestock than the tank itself, and getting it fixed means that your livestock will be in tubs and buckets for several days at least, and you're probably going to lose some of it. Once you've transferred eveything to the new tank, you can get the old one fixed leisurely and sell it to recoup some of the cost of the new one.

Think of it as an opportunity to upgrade!

Boy....memories....this happened to my 100 gal Oceanic a year & 3 months ago....it kept getting worse...decision was to either reseal the 100 or take the opportunity to upgrade. Ended up upgrading to a 180 Brick....best thing I've done so far in this hobby. Resealed the 100 and sold its' setup to recoup some of the cost of the new one. It was a pain in the butt for about a month as Oceanic was behind in manufacturing both the 100 gal & 180 brick. Fin Addict played a major part in working with Oceanic due to my emergency and I had a custom built 180 Brick between 1-2 weeks.

I feel for you - but it is next to impossible to pinpoint the problem cause the water sits along the trim. We tried to reseal from the inside with water in it to no avail. My advice is to get it broken down as soon as you can with a plan in mind...cause it takes at least a week to get it resealed. I was lucky to be loaned a temporary tank with a motor to keep my fish & corals going till the transfer/plumbing of the new tank. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
